Barry Lopez
American essayist, poet, fiction writer best known for its ecological concerns. Barry Holstun Lopez is an American naturalist and author of fiction, essays, and articles, a lecturer and teacher, a photographer and environmentalist, has written for children, and has participated in stage productions and the creation of several artists� books. His writing reflects his deep concern with the human spirit and the natural environment, both in fiction works such as Desert Notes: Reflections in the Eye of a Raven; River Notes: The Dance of Herons; and Winter Count; and in his non-fiction books such as the National Book Award finalist (), Of Wolves and Men, and his National Book Award winner, Arctic Dreams: Imagination and Desire in a Northern Landscape. Born in in Port Chester, New York, Lopez grew up in Southern California and New York City and received his bachelor�s degree at the University of Notre Dame. He moved to Eugene, Oregon in to pursue graduate studies at the University of Oregon, and has continued to live in Oregon since. In 20, Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, acquired Barry Lopez's manuscripts, correspondence, notebooks, and other archival materials to found the James E. Sowell Family Collection in Literature, Community, and the Natural World. The papers of other writers have since been added. In 20 Lopez was appointed TTU�s first Visiting Distinguished Scholar, and he helped to design a new undergraduate Honors College program, the B.A. in Natural History & the Humanities. Most recently he has been working on a program between TTU and the Comanche Nation College in Lawton, Oklahoma to foster education and the preservation of cultural lore.
