He has written a memoir, TURNAROUND: How America's Top Cop Reversed the Crime Epidemic, which was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year, and co-authored Scene of the Crime: Photographs from the LAPD Archive and Managing Police Operations: Implementing the NYPD Crime Control Model Using COMPSTAT. He has also contributed many articles to various professional journals.
