'American actress, screenwriter and novelist. Carrie Frances Fisher is the daughter of singer Eddie Fisher and actress Debbie Reynolds. Her first movie appearance was in the comedy Shampoo, but she is best known for her role as Princess Leia Organa in the original Star Wars trilogy which began in . While she achieved international fame in her role as Princess Leia, Fisher had become addicted to alcohol and drugs due to bipolar disorder. Despite this, she continued her career until when she suffered a drug overdose and entered rehab. Her first novel, Postcards from the Edge, was published in , became a bestseller, and brought her the Los Angeles Pen Award for Best First Novel. Fisher's adaption of the novel for the screen resulted in the movie. She has continued to fight her mental disabilities, but appeared in many supporting roles in films and on TV, and freely discuss her problems with drugs and battles with bipolar disorder in various forums. In the s she gained recognition as a screenwriter, and became one of the highest-paid 'script doctors' in Hollywood. Since then Fisher has hosted a TV talk show, Conversations From the Edge. Fisher wrote three other novels: Surrender the Pink (), Delusions of Grandma (), and The Best Awful There Is (20). '
