Lavinia R. Davis
'American author of children's books, juvenile and teenage novels, and adult mysteries. Except for what she wrote, Lavinia Riker Davis ( - ) remains something of a mystery despite being the author of two books whose illustrator, Hildegard Woodward, won Caldecott Award Honor Medals in and , an award given each year to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. Some of her children's books were illustrated by other important artists such as Leonard Weisgard, Edward Shenton, Paul Brown, Gilbert Riswold, Paul Lantz, and Frank Dobias. She wrote at least books most under her own name and a few published only under the pseudonym 'Wendell Farmer'. Her output covered the spectrum in children's books from picture books to juvenile mysteries for both boys and girls, and novels written for older teenage girls. Her short stories were published in The American Girl , American Boy, Open Road for Boys, St Nicholas, The Magazine of Fantasty & Science Fiction, and probably other magazines. She also wrote several adult mysteries published by Doubleday's Crime Club, A Bibliography of the Writings of Edith Wharton which was published in a limited edition of 3 copies, and The Journals of Lavinia Riker Davis which was privately published posthumously in by her nephew.
