'American actress of stage, screen and television, and Ruth Elizabeth 'Bette' Davis ( � ) was a two-time Academy Award-winner and was second only to Katharine Hepburn in the number of Academy Award nominations () for Best Actress. After a brief and rather lackluster career start in New York in the late 20s, Davis went to Hollywood in late where she met with little success even in second-rate films until her performance in On Human Bondage brought her major critical acclaim. By she had two Academy Awards and was Warner Brothers most successful actress. Her career briefly waned in the late s until her appearance in All About Eve earned her another Oscar nomination. Her career again ebbed through the s, but her performance in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? brought her renewed critical acclaim and another Oscar nomination. Davis spent most of the remainder of her career working in television productions where she received a Best Actress Emmy and several other awards. Ultimately, her career spanned six decades, almost one hundred films, and over sixty awards. She was renowned for her forceful screen presence, portrayals of strong women, and artistic versatility. Davis was the first woman to serve as president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, as well as the first actress to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute which also voted her '#2 Best Actress of All-Time,' second to Katharine Hepburn. During World War II, Davis was president and a co-founder of the 'Hollywood Canteen' established to entertain servicemen. She wrote three biographies: The Lonely Life, Mother Goddam, and This 'N' That (). '
