Bestselling American novelist, poet and screenwriter, political activist, and farmer. Except for Brown's mysteries, her novels resist neat categorization. Brown graduated from New York University with a B.A. in English and the Classics. While there, she published two collections of feminist poetry: The Hand that Cradles the Rock and Songs to a Handsome Woman. In , she received a Ph.D. from the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington D.C. She has been active in the Civil Rights Movement, the Anti-War movement, the Gay Liberation movement, and the Feminist movement. With Sneaky Pie Brown, she has co-authored thirteen Mrs. Murphy mysteries featuring Sneaky Pie's fellow cats. Perhaps less well known, are her non-fiction works which include an autobiography, a provocative writer's manual, a collection of her political articles, and a cookbook. As a television writer, she won Emmy nominations for her ABC series, I Love Liberty and for the NBC mini-series The Long Hot Summer.
