Welcome to oldcomputerbooks.com

We specialize in vintage computing books, manuals, journals, references, documentation and more -- from ENIAC to IBM, from the era of vacuum tubes, to the transistor, to microprocessors; from punched cards to early personal computers.

If you are interested in the history of computing, we invite you to browse our ever-changing inventory. We have books covering many aspects of computer science, engineering and mathematics relating to computation -- including the history of programming, older programming languages, operating systems, information theory, biographies of the companies and people who were computer pioneers, electroacoustic and computer music items, and much more. Most of our items cover the period from the 1930's through the early 1980's, but we have some earlier (and some later!) items.

Whether you are a collector of highspots in the history of computing, or a classic computing hobbyist looking for an original user's manual, or an engineer seeking an older reference book, we invite you to explore our shelves.

And, if you don't see what you're looking for, please contact us! We have many thousands of books and journals not yet catalogued, and we're always adding more . . . we would be happy to help you find what you need.

Because we believe in making the old technology more accessible.

You can contact us with your requests at www.oldcomputerbooks.com or e-mail us at info@oldcomputerbooks.com.

Nyquist, Henry ; Harry Nyquist   Certain Topics in Telegraph Transmission Theory, in, Transactions of the AIEE 1928  Publisher: American Institute of Electrical Engineers, quarterly transactions, volume 47 number 2 April 1928; separate issue. Very Good, light wear to edges, prev. owner's name in ink at top of front cover, stamp of school of mines & technology at upper right corner of both frontpage & titlepage. Solid binding, with evidence of rusty staples (still tight) & cover beginning to pull loose from textblock slightly along the lower third. Oversized journal, seldom seen separate issue

Quarterly Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, volume 47 number 2, April 1928, this issue only. The first separate appearance of Nyquist's important paper, in which he expanded his analysis into the transmission of data. Sometimes cited as a more important paper than his first (1924), because of this additional work on his theorem. It was reprinted as one of the IEEE's classic papers in the Proc. IEEE, Vol. 90, No. 2, Feb 2002. Most importantly he determined that the sampling rate of a signal would need to be at least twice the highest frequency in order to reconstruct it at the destination (the Nyquist Theorem).

In 1948, Claude Shannon provided a mathematical proof of this theory and in his landmark paper, Shannon acknowledged the work done by Nyquist, as well that by Hartley. See OOC 343 which discusses Nyquist's earlier BSTJ 1924 article. Nyquist's work is one of the important and primary influences on Shannon's later work in information theory.
