5.   Cummings, e. e. (Edward Estlin), 1894-1962   The Enormous Room   Picture
Publisher: N.Y., Boni & Liveright [1922]. 2 leaves, vii, 9 -271 p. For a full account of the history and publication of this edition see Charles Norman, The Magic Maker, pp. 108-127. First edition, first state, with expletive "shit" at p. 219. Why that word would be objected to in the midst of so much degradation of souls so successfully conveyed by Cummings describing his three months' imprisonment in France during World War I is hard to imagine now. 6.   Cummings, E. E. (Edward Estlin), 1894-1962. Dupee, F. W. & George Stade, editors.   Selected Letters of E. E. Cummings. Edited by F. W. Dupee and George Stade.   Publisher: N.Y., Harcourt Brace, 1969. xxiv, 296 p., illus., 24.5 cm. A collection of 265 letters arranged chronologically from his fifth year to his last. "On the whole, Cummings seems not to have regarded letter writing as either a conscious art or vehicle for any urgent confessional impulse." Here is the cryptic verbal exuberance of his poetry. 7.   Cummings, E. E. (Edward Estlin), 1894-1962.   Collected Poems 1922-1939.   Publisher: N.Y., Book of the Month Club, 1990. unpaginated, ca. 500 p.; 23.5 cm. 315 poems. Adapted from the 1977 Franklin Mint edition. This is a remarkable production. What would e. e. have thought of the pretentiousness of a Franklin Mint pseudofication? And Book of the Month Club!? The fact that the two (non-)entities thought there was a broad enough market is interesting. No editorial credit is given (although Nancy T. Andrews held the 1977 copyright, so she must have contributed something). Yet somebody decided to exclude all of the post-1938 poetry and arrange it in its form. Checking the web, there are no copies of this edition in LC, Brown, Columbia, Yale. Liberians, it seems, are too snobbish to add this nicely made but unfashionable bibliographical entity to major poetry collections. Vg/dj vg. 101733.

First edition, ordinary issue; Firmage A7a. “Statement to a certain public by a certain publisher. There is good reason for Mr. Cummings’ crypticism in his description of Him. We do not remember any book that more baffles an attempt to describe it. You may think you know what to expect in a play by Cummings— and you will find that you didn’t know the half of it.
