3.   Damon, S. [Samuel] Foster, 1893-1971   The Moulton Tragedy. A Heroic Poem with Lyrics   Publisher: Gambit, Incorporated, Boston, 1970. xiv, [3], 253 p.; 23.5 cm. First Printing. Panoramas and lyrics and narrative pieces and dramatic pieces and meditations succeed one another opportunely, so that nothing cloys or becomes boring… At the present time, a readable historical poem in which pride, lust, and greed are taken seriously, with amplitude and spirit, must give a decent refreshment to the mind. Jonathan Moulton, as New Hampshire place names still attest, was a historical figure of importance— explorer, land holder, Indian fighter, public man, and eventually general. But he also was and is an equally genuine figure of dark legend, a man who got the better of everyone, including the devil himself, and who lived his life under this sinister and heavy bargain without repentance. The moods of the poem are many, but its tension and its motion are produced by lines of imaginative force constantly pulling fact and legend toward each other. With the authors ink presentation inscription. Stock# 100,262x. Fine/ dj vg. American literature.

10.   Damon, S. [Samuel] Foster, 1893-1971   The Negro in Early American Songsters   Publisher: N.Y., PBSA, 1934. Reprinted for private circulation from 'The Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America,' Vol. XXVIII, Part 2, 1934 (pp. 132-163). Stapled in brown paper wrappers; VG+. 'The most vigorous American arts are democratic, and have risen from the soil, often against the disapproval of the cultured, who prefer to import or imitate… The strongest single element in this music of ours is unquestionably the negro element. …Recently I was turning over some eighty odd songsters published in or before 1830, now in the Harris Collection of American Poetry and Plays, at Brown University; and the negro material there seemed to justify various notes and conclusions which I shall present here, in the hope that this paper may be of use to some future historian of our song.' 11.   Damon, S. (Samuel ) Foster, 1893-1971.   The History of Square-Dancing.   Publisher: Reprinted from the Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society, April 1952. 'For some years now, I have been gathering information from old dance-books, town-histories, travellers' chronicles, newspapers, novels of the old times, even poetry and sheet-music, with results which have fitted together into an outline- history of this forgotten phase of our culture. This history is not unamusing, pivoting as it does, now upon some great revolution, and again upon so trivial a matter as a change of style in ladies' skirts. For the history of square-dancing is an expression of the ever-changing time-spirit.' [63]-98 p., 25 cm. Grey printed paper wrappers, as issued; VG.
