Karl Baedeker, founder of the German Baedeker guidebook publishing house was born into a bookselling family at Essen in 1801. He is loosely credited with compiling many of the guides since his name appeared on the title page : Karl Baedeker died in 1859, the printing works were from then controlled by his son Fritz who, in 1872, moved the business to Leipzig from it's original home at Koblenz. Ironically Karl Baedeker wrote his first guidebook - Holland, Belgium and The Rhine - for the London publishing house of John Murray, famous for their Murray's Handbooks for Travellers, which in later years were in direct competition with their Baedeker equivalent. The Baedeker guides were often published in English and French as well as German : certain titles such as the English edition of "Russia with Teheran, Port Arthur and Peking - handbook for travellers." (1914) are particularly sought-after ; it was published some 55 years after Karl Baedeker's death with him, or more accurately his publishing house, named as author.
Some of the more sought-after titles have in the last thirty years been reproduced in facsimile, but this has not affected the value of the original editions.

Bound in usual red cloth with gilt title lettering darkened, spine darkened, spine slightly rubbed, and rear cover lower corner worn, internally a good tight copy with both ribbons present, slight browning to page edges, usual marble edged text block. Good plus cond. 6 1/4 x 4 1/4 inches

Fully collated as is stores practice with all Baedeker travel guides ; spine and cover titling very bright, one ribbon mark present, a good tight copy, bright and clean, light ink owners name to front pastedown. Very good cond with minor wear and rubbing to spine extremities. 6 1/4 x 4 1/4 inches
