1.   Foster, Genevieve   George Washington's World   Publisher: 1997. New Beautiful Feet Paperback This expanded edition has some added information by FosterĘs daughter Joanna. Brought back into print by Beautiful Feet Books, this comprehensive biography covers the important events all over the world from George Washington's birth until his death. This is a wonderful book to read aloud to the whole family. A fourth grader can handle the reading, but it's a shame to limit the book to just one family member at a time. This book is INTERESTING. The author considered history a drama, and she portrayed it dramatically. Mrs. Foster enhances her story with wonderful charts that introduce each time period. These contain drawings of important people and events during that period from all over the world. These will give you great ideas for who and what to put on an illustrated time line. They also help you see the whole picture, and provide a reference point when you need to get the people you're reading about back into perspective. Mrs. Foster also provides maps to help readers follow the events in the book. Besides the biography itself, the 357 pages in this soft cover book contain an index, some biographical information on how the book came to be written, and a list of other books about this period of history. New book. ; 357 pages; ISBN: 096438034X

2.   Foster, Genevieve   World of Captain John Smith   Publisher: 1959. Beautiful Feet Paperback Oversize quality paper. This slice of history is measured by the lifetime of Captain John Smith, who lived in the days of Queen Elizabeth, and was a daring adventurer. If all you know abut him is his life in Jamestown, you're missing a lot. Did you also know he was an escaped slave? One special feature I appreciate in this and other Foster books is the historical perspective presented in the wonderful illustrated time charts found at the beginning of each unit. These show which important people were living and ruling and what important events were taking place in technology, religion, literature, and the arts. And this reads like the adventure story it is rather than like a textbook, which it isn't. I read it aloud to my children and we discussed it together. I also had them read other biographies of Smith, each on his own level, so that we could compare them. But this book has a much wider span than a biography. It is indeed the story of the whole world between 1580 and 1632. You will probably learn more about Jamestown in this book than you will in the textbooks, and you will also learn about the part the Pilgrims played in the New World. 406 pages with index; 406 pages; ISBN: 1893103005

3.   Foster, Genevieve   Augustus Caesar's World 44BC to AD14   Picture
Publisher: 1975. New Beautiful Feet Paperback This fascinating biography of Caesar covers the history of the world, especially the Roman world, from the year he was eighteen, the year his uncle, Julius Caesar was murdered, until his own death in AD 14. In between the reader meets Brutus and Cassius, Antony and Cleopatra, Cicero the orator, Virgil, the poet, Herod, the king of the Jews, the rabbi Hillel, and finally, Jesus of Nazareth.

The author helps keep the reader oriented to the times through a series of charts at the beginning of each new time period. These illustrated charts show who was important and which events were significant during each phase of the life of Augustus.

This book will lay a solid foundation in the study of Ancient Rome for middle grade students without boring them. It shows students how interesting history can be.
