I started my love affair with the African continent, and the literature concerning it, Africana books, with emphasis on South Africa, some 60 years ago. Since then I have been an avid reader on all aspects of the continent's history, humanities and natural history – so I will gladly advise clients on the best choices to cater for their needs. If you are visiting our beautiful country and city, please do pop in to meet us and browse our books. Africana Books is located a few minutes from the city centre, on the slopes of Devil's Peak. Parking is normally not a problem. Just ring us to make sure we're in, and if necessary for directions on how to get here.

Please be assured that your financial transactions will be treated with the best security available. Mastercard, Visa, Amex and Diners welcome; with the first three we also need the last three numbers appearing on the signature strip on the reverse side, the CVC number, for all transactions. Newsletter: Africana Votes and Views

I review a number of books on African subjects, old and new, all the time. Some are old acquaintances, but re-read after years or decades, some are seen in the light of the passing seasons and current events and even some of my travels are desvribed. Others are new authors, or new titles by old friends.

E-mail your request to be included on the mailing list to, you will receive these short newsletters periodically on what I gleaned; the subject matter, readability, accuracy as well as my views as to whether the books belong in everyman's collection, or whether they are for specialists only. Some contributions will be on practical aspects of book-collecting, maintenance and even DIY publishing. Occasionally I write articles for the Society of Bibliophiles in Cape Town, or a little historical broadsheet, the "Cape Odyssey" and other publications - on matters other than books about Africa, and these may be included. Alternatively, you can have a look through the whole archive at our blogspot:

SCHAEFER A A   Life & Travels in the Northwest 1850-1899  Publisher: Yoshi Publishing/Africana Books 2008. ISBN or SBN Number: 9780620404150. A new era started in 1850 in Namaqualand. The red gold, copper, started to flow from the underground veins in increasing streams, nourishing industry and economic growth. People flocked to this new Eldorado in the desert. These are the stories told by travellers, miners, a cleric, engineers, a transport rider, geologists, surveyors and a quirky magistrate - describing some incredibly harsh conditions of life and labour, the hazards of travel, the locals and their foibles, the conflicts, as well as some lighter moments of the half-century that followed. Many of the excerpts in the book have been taken almost verbatim from obscure sources not readily found by the interested casual visitor or reader, while others have been translated from German, Dutch and Afrikaans to make them more easily accessible. ISBN: 978-0-620-40415-0, 260 pp with dwgs by Tony Grogan Mint condition in softcover. All books are shipped from South Africa. We will email with price quote for shipping.
