I started my love affair with the African continent some 57 years ago. Since then
I have been an avid reader on all aspects of the continent's history, humanities
and natural history. At one time or another I have been an amateur historian,
archaeologist, zoologist, botanist, geologist and traveller. I run the business
with my part-time assistant, Zainu Vigis, from the basement part of my house,
where we cram some 3500 volumes onto the shelves. All of these are on our database
so searching is easy; we make extensive use of KEYWORDS - so try them if you are
not sure what you are looking for. Speciality E-mail lists are issued on request,
and we do publish a paper catalogue of latest acquisitions every four months for
local South African customers, which overseas clients may receive per E-mail, if desired.
We specialise in books about Africa, with emphasis on Southern Africa. Our stock
comprises books published between the 17th & 21st centuries, mainly in English and
Afrikaans, with smaller numbers of Dutch, German and French titles. Our books are
priced in US Dollars, and thumbnail images of all books priced at $50 and more are
supplied. We keep a "WANTS" database, and welcome any request and will do our best
to find uncommon items dealing with Africa. If required, further scanned images of
covers, or dustjackets are available for most books and any further queries regarding
condition, or within reason, content, will be answered with pleasure and answers
will be sent per E-mail.
All correspondence will be answered as promptly as possible; if you have not received
a reply, it means we didn't get your message - it seems to happen sometimes. If you
wish to phone or fax us, please do, but please take into account that our time zone
is GMT+2, as we need our beauty sleep and are not too good at answering book queries
at 3 am. One of our computers is on Skype and when we are at this screen we are
available as: fennec45.
If you are visiting our beautiful country and city, please do pop in to meet us and browse
our books. Just ring us to make sure we're in. Tel & Fax No +27 21 461 2382.
We have been a proud member of the TOMFOLIO co-operative
bookmall for a number of years (www.tomfolio.com).
We fully subscribe to their standards of excellence, integrity as well as individuality.
Please be assured that your financial transactions will be treated with the best security
available. Mastercard, Visa, Amex and Diners welcome; with the first three we also need
the last three numbers appearing on the signature strip on the reverse side, the CVC number,
for all transactions. Before we ship any overseas order, we will contact the client with a
quotation for the different mailing options and their costs. All parcels, except those sent
by Second-Class Airmail, are either registered or insured for a nominal amount, subject
to our postal regulations, which unfortunately preclude insurance options for a number
of countries.
While descriptions of condition are always subjective, we try to describe books as fairly
and completely as possible. We guarantee delivery of books as described; any complaints
or discrepancies must be reported within 72 hrs of receipt.
NEW SERVICE!!
Africana Votes and Views:
I still read a number of books on Africa, old and new, every month. Some are old acquaintances,
but re-read after years or decades, and they are sometimes seen in the light of the passing
seasons. Others are new authors, or new titles by old friends.
By E-mailing your request to be included on the mailing list to
bookman@africanabooks.com,
you will receive a monthly short newsletter on what I read; the subject matter, readability,
accuracy as well as my views as to whether the books belong in everyman's collection, or
whether they are for specialists only. Occasionally I write articles for the Society of
Bibliophiles in Cape Town, or a little historical broadsheet, the "Cape Odyssey" and other
publications - on matters other than books about Africa, and these may be included. Alternatively,
you can have a look through them at my blogspot:
