PATENTED 1855 CLOTHING BUCKLE.
Manufacturer: West Haven Buckle Co., West Haven, CT. Mid to late 19th C.. Brass bow & steel wire loop. The top of the bow is decoratively embossed & the underside is embossed "Patent 1855". 1 1/2" across the bow, 9/16" between the prongs & 1 1/8" from the bow to the ends of the prongs. Sheldon S. Hartshorn of Orange, CT was awarded patent 13,218 on July 10, 1855 for the manufacture of this buckle, which was assigned to the West Haven Buckle Company, West Haven, CT. The patentwas reissued in 1868 & 1874. These buckles have been found at Civil War sites and on Civil War clothing, although their use was not limited to military applications.
