SALESMAN’S SAMPLE of Advertising Rain Gauge, Mint in Box.
This box with the bright read lid measures about 6x4 inches, with the rain gauge fitting snugly inside. The sample gauge is for Pfister Associated growers, the sample is No. 819-A. The legend inside the box lid indicates that the cost for these would be 100 for .51 each, 150 for .49 each, 500 for .47 each, 1000 for .46. Charges are included for additional colors, mailers, copy changes, etc. Not dated, probably 1950s. These were no doubt sold to proprietors of feed and seed, livestock supply, farm supply stores and perhaps to salesmen of such items as windmills, heavy farming equipment, and so on. A rain gauge would definitely be of interest and useful to farmers and ranchers. This instrument, when set in the open, would collect rainwater to a height of 5 inches. The little dial at the top would then be turned to keep a running total up to 10 feet. The prices per volume unit inside the lid have been changed in pencil. The bottom of the box is white on the inside with a red interior. The perimeter of the white paper is discolored with tiny age speckles and there is some rubbing to the corners of the lid, otherwise the item is in very good condition. It’s a glimpse of mid-20th Century rural America. TFAC1001
