McCloskey, Robert   Make Way for Ducklings
Publisher: New York: Viking Press, 1941.
First Edition. "First published August 1941" on copyright page. No additional printing noted. Quarto (12" x 9"). No pagination [64 pp.]. Brown ink text and illustrations throughout. Tan cloth hardcover with green spine lettering and green duckling illustration on top front. Dust jacket missing (sigh). Nevertheless, this is a very bright and clean true first in Near Fine condition (light dusting at top edge with shallow, minor bumping on bottom edge; tiniest bit of fray bottom spine edge; end papers foxed as usually seen). Original owner's inscription in pencil on f.f.e.p.: "B.L. Link [?] for Grace Valentine's Day 1942." Small store sticker at bottom edge of f.f.ep.: "The Personal Book Shop, Boston." Contents remarkably clean without thumbing or finger soil, but with occasional very tiny aged spots and shallow very light creasing. Light offprint from lithographs is evident as usual. Rare in any condition--incredibly rare in this highly collectible condition. More photos may be found at facebook.com/hasbeanebooksMcCloskey won the 1942 Caldecott Medal for his now classic sepia illustrations (charcoal drawings converted to lithographs on zinc plates). The story follows Mr. and Mrs. Mallard Duck as they establish their nest on an island in the Lagoon of the Boston Public Gardens and navigate with their ducklings through Boston traffic with help of Officer Michael. The book has been named the official children’s book of Massachusetts and has become one of the best-known and most highly collectible children’s picture books of all time.
