Révolution de l’Amérique
Author: Raynal, M. l'Abbé [Guillaume Thomas François] (1713-1796) Publisher: Dublin Chez Guillaume Wilson 1781
Duodecimo, 3/4 leather, Engraved head and tail-piece, [i-ii], vii-[viii], 131 pages. Condition: Very Good. Scarce Dublin imprint of the French edition of this curious work, published without Abbey Raynal's permission. It is advertised by its "Editor" as having come from a previously unpublished manuscript but is now believed to have been pirated from the 1780 revision of Raynal's "Histoire Philosophique et Politique" (see Adams, 'The American Controversy, ' vol. II, pp. 776-777). Interestingly, Thomas Paine responded to this work in 1782 with numerous corrections of errors, a refutation of Raynal's notion that the American Revolution was little more than a dispute over tariffs and taxes, and a complaint that Raynal had copied portions of "Common Sense" without acknowledgment. ADAMS, AMERICAN CONTROVERSY #81-59k; SABIN #68103. Bound in marbled paper over boards with leather spine and corner tips, spine lettered in gilt. Rubs to exterior extremities and along joints, gilt on spine remains legible. This copy lacks all but the last page of the Introduction, though the title page and text itself are complete. It is unclear whether this is a binding error or subsequent loss. Parts of signatures B and C protrude slightly from the rest of the textblock. Endpapers mildly foxed, hinges remain sound. Military History Quantity available: 1.
