Tratado De Commercio, E Navegacao Entre Os Muito Altos, E Muito Poderosos Senhores O Principe Regente De Portugal, E El Reino Unido Da Grande Bretanha E Irlanda, Asignado No Rio De Janeiro
Author: Great Britain. Treaties, etc. Portugal 1810 Feb. 19. Published by Lisboa: Na Impressao Regia Anno De M.DCCC. XIX. [1819]. Folio 33 p. (A-I2, I2 blank). 31.5 cm. The vital treaty between Great Britain and Portugal signed during the Napoleonic Wars as Wellesley was conducting the Peninsular war to save the Portuguese from the terrors experienced by the Spanish. The treaty opened all Brazilian ports to English merchants and signalled for the first time that non-Portuguese were allowed to trade directly with the colony. Maria I (17344-1816) was not only old, in 1792 she had suffered a mental collapse and her son Jaoa, John VI, served as Regent 24 years. In 1810 the government was in exile in Brazil and thus the Royal Press issued the first edition in Rio in 1810. This Lisbon edition was issued to make legitimate the treaty, with the restoration of the Capital and the accession of John as King. A very good copy, bound in recent half leather. HAN. OB /OS 3
