Later Edition Five quarto volumes, 3 of the 1859 edition of Michaux, 2 (3 volumes in two books) of the 1865 edition of Nuttall's expansion of Michaux's work. Uniformly bound in brown morocco, covers (contemporary or nearly so) heavily tooled in blind. Spines with 5 raised bands, title in gilt, simple blind stamped device in other four compartments. Dark brown endpapers, all edges gilt. The Michaux volumes contain 156 hand-colored stipple engravings, and the Nuttall volumes contain 121 hand-colored lithographs, each showing the branch form, leaf, flower and fruit of the species. Reese, Stamped with a National Character, 21. A major botanical study. Michaux's work was actually carried out in the late 18th century, Nuttall's in the early to mid-19th century. Michaux was first published in France in 1817 to 1819, The first American edition combining the work of both authors was published in 1841-1852. This edition uses new stones for the Nutall lithography since the originals were destroyed in 1856. A lovely set, clean and sound inside. Two joints professionally repaired. Light edge wear.
