Summerill, Lt. Comdr. John F.
Tanker Manual
Publisher: Cornell Maritime Press, 1947 New York.
Book. Book condition: Good to Very Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 12mo - over 6 - 7" tall "..(An) important change in ship operation.. was the introduction of the bulk-liquid carrying ships. When these first appeared, shortly before the turn of the century, they were greeted by the seagoing fraternity with the same apprehension, and perhaps disdain, that was shown by the sailing shipman of a century before. Again the change was difficult to make. The tankerman was a man apart - and to date he so remains - though, happily, this attitude is rapidly disappearing. The tankerman has been beset by the same problems as his predecessor - the complications resulting from trying to carry over former methods and knowledge to a new situation which calls for specialized training. The securing of this training without using a practical apprentice system for officers and crew alike, appears to have been a stumbling block. The available material concerning this subject - while excellently written and technically correct - does not actually serve the purpose as a primary training manual for the prospective tankerman. This material has either been too technical and impractical, has been merely a question and answer training aid to an officer's study for his license examination, or has served as the crewman's key to a tankerman's certificate. In the following pages the primary purpose has been to present material to the future tankerman in an essentially practical and workable form. Detailed data on construction and stability, the technical matter concerning petroleum and other products, have been omitted - leaving this study to the petroleum engineer, chemist, and marine architect. It is for the seagoing mates, engineers, and crews that this book is designed, to help them in this new and modern profession - the tankerman.." Illustrated. 150 pages with index. Book is in GOOD or better condition. No dust jacket.
