Quarto, [10] p. (A-E1); 20 cm. Unrecorded printed document issued by a lottery intended to improve the culture of New York. Signed and dated at end: Thomas Storm, Daniel Hale, Solomon Southwick, John L.Broome, John H. Sickles, Managers. It was Sickles who, some years later (1818) at the Baldwin trial, proved to be cheating (see Ezell pp. 187-189). Stitched; good. Stock#OB427 oversize.

Signed and dated at end: David Gelston, Thomas Storm, Daniel Hale, Philip Ten Eyck, Solomon Southwick, managers. "In 1809 the state lost $41,059.78 because of the defalcation of Philip Ten Eyck" (Ezell, p. 187). Edges frayed; good. Stock#OB426 oversize.

Approximately 198 lottery tickets from the Caribbean and South America from the collection of Paul Richards, a manuscript dealer who collected lottery tickets of the United States. As lotteries were illegal in this country from 1894 to the 1960s, residents of the U.S. bought tickets overseas. 181 tickets from Puerto Rico between 1862 and 1969, with many duplicates. Tickets also from Buenos Aires (1913), Argentina (1913), Santiago de Chile (1866), Rio de Janeiro (1947); complete list on request. Price is for the collection. Condition generally very good.
