Twelve volumes; 19.5 cm. Title vignette. This huge poem was first published 1868-1870. The twelve-volume edition from which this derives was one of Morris's last projects, in 1896, at the Kelmscott Press. A series of twenty-four tales, two for each month of the year; twelve from classical sources, the other twelve chiefly from medieval Latin, French and Icelandic originals. Contents: An Apology. Prologue: The Wanderers. The Author to the Reader; March: Atalanta’s Race. The Man Born To Be King; April: Doom of King Acrisius. The Proud King; May: Story of Cupid and Psyche. The Land East of the Sun and West of the Moon; October: Story of Acontius and Cydippe. The Man Who Never Laughed Again; November: Story of Rhodope. Lovers of Gudrun; December: Golden Apples. Fostering of Aslaug; January: Bellerophon at Argos. Ring Given to Venus; February: Bellerophon in Lycia. Hill of Venus; Epilogue; L’Envoi. Each volume has the bookplate of John Quinn (1870-1925). Later edition Five octavo volumes in half polished calf, marbled boards, edges and endpapers. An attractive set of this classical biographical work. Gilt stamped spines, five raised bands with reddish brown morocco spine labels. A very attractive set with light to moderate corner wear and surface rubbing. A light red stain to the front cover of volume V; a couple of small inkstains to the front of volume IV; a mild stain to the cover of volume III. Hardcover Hardcover Very Good
