Full leather binding with blind stamped decorations and gilt titles and stamped floral decorations, yellow endpapers, all edges gilt. xviii, 253, 1 (ads) pages. Corners and edges rubbed, spine has been sympathetically repaired sometime in the past. The original green color has faded at edges and spine toward brown. Minor foxing to a few pages, affecting the margins of a couple of plates. Ornamental frontis and 26 gorgeous hand-colored plates (complete) of flowers and plants by the author. Louisa (also known as Louise) Anne Twamley [1812-1895] was born in Birmingham, England. A self-taught but gifted writer, artist, and botanist, she published her first book of poems in 1835 when she was 20, followed in 1836 by the beautifully-illustrated Romance of Nature in 1836. Her renderings of flowers in this book are delicate, lively, and lovely . She later married Charles Meredith of New South Wales and in 1939 they moved to Oyster Bay, Tasmania. Louisa Meredith produced many books on the flora and fauna of Tasmania and also worked there to have wildlife protection laws enacted. She is considered to be a State treasure by Tasmanians.
