First Edition Octavo in burgundy crushed morocco by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. Triple rule border on covers; five raised spine bands with extra gilt compartments, extra gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers. 267 pages plus a page of directions to binder for placing the plates. Illustrated by 24 hand-colored plates by Thomas Rowlandson. The adventures in verse of the foundling of Dr. Syntax, the author stating that it should be viewed as an English "Gil Blas". The paper is lightly toned, but clean and without foxing; the endpaper edges are toned from the leather turn-ins. A couple of tiny abrasions along the bottom edge of the front cover; joints slightly rubbed. A wonderful copy in a superior binding. Hardcover Hardcover Near Fine
