Glossary Q

Quarter Bound Quarto (4to): A book size designating a book up to 12" tall. Abbreviation 4to. See Book Sizes and Formats Figure 2.

Quadragesimo-octavo (48mo): A book size designating a book up to 4" tall. Abbreviation 48mo. See Book Sizes and Formats Figure 2.

Quarter Bound
Quarter Bound: A book whose Spine and a small adjacent area of the Panels is bound in a different material than the reminder of the panels. Generally the spine cover is of a better material than that used on the panels, e.g. leather or cloth where the covers are boards or paper-covered boards. Given boarder use of materials and their combination in more recent books, books are now quarter bound with different colored or textured clothes and papers, imitation leather, various plastics, etc. Thus, a description in the form "1/4 XX and YY" means the spine is bound in XX and the covers in YY. Figures 18 and 19 show various 1/4 bindings.

Quarter Leather: A book with a Leather Bound Spine. See also Quarter Bound above.

Quire: Another name for Signature.
