The Costumes and Textiles of India
Publisher: Taraporevala's Treasure House of Books, 1958 Bombay, INDIA.
Book. Book condition: Good to Very Good. Fair. Hardcover 4to - over 9 - 12" tall "Well written and sumptuously produced with hundreds of illustrations culled from many sources, this is the only book of its size on the Costumes and Textiles of India available today. The author has dealt with the origin of clothing, ancient Indian dress, clothes of the Muslim period, modern Indian dress - both male and female, embroidery, the arts of cloth dyeing and printing, the craft of the weaver, and the history of the Indian textile industry. The Bibliography lists almost all the books relevant to the subject and this will help the reader who wishes to pursue the study further. The many coloured and monochrome half-tone illustrations show the many different styles of dress prevalent in India, and the beauty of India's famous fabrics and traditional textile designs in cotton, silk and wool. The crafts of the Indian embroiderer and block printer have also been illustrated. The 702 line drawings illustrate from ancient sources - sculptures and miniature paintings - the costume types of the Indus Valley Culture, of Bharhut, Bhaja, Sanchi, Amaravati, the Kushana, Mathura and Gandhara periods, the costumes depicted in Ajanta and Ellora, the elaborate costumes, both male and feamle, of the Muslim period, and the traditional dance costumes of the country. Other line sketches illustrate embroidery motifs and the block printer's designs.." 17 illustrations in color, 360 in monochrome and 702 line drawings. 92 text pages + illustrations. Book is in GOOD to VERY GOOD condition. Dust jacket is in FAIR condition; complete, but with more than expected wear.
