The Beauty of Sail.

Publisher: London: Adlard Coles, Limited, 1952..
Second Impression, 1954 Blue cloth stamped in gilt. Unpaginated, but 96 full page photographic plates on rectos with lengthy captions opposite. A nice collection of sailing photographs from the waters around England. Inside is clean, bright and sound, but the stamp of the U.S. distributor of the book is on the title page. The covers are lightly edgeworn; the front cover foredge has a significant bump. The jacket is missing a couple of inches of the front foredge with some associated tears and wrinkles around it. Calahan, Harold Augustin
Gadgets and Wrinkles: A Compendium of Man's Ingenuity at Sea
 Picture
Publisher: The Macmillan Company, 1946 New York.
Book. Book condition: Good to Very Good. Good. Hardcover 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall "The complicated business of sailing a boat efficiently and the equally complicated business of living aboard her comfortably have called forth, throughout the centuries, man's ingenuity and inventiveness. Any mechanical device to which that inventiveness gives rise is called, in sailor's argot, a GADGET. On the other hand, any method of procedure which it develops is known as a WRINKLE. 'Gadgets and Wrinkles' is a compendium of the ingenuity and inventiveness of the sailors of all nations and all ages. But the book is devoted mainly to gadgets and wrinkles used by modern yachtsmen on modern yachts. The marconi rig, the penchant for ocean racing, the increased use of wire and winches, the invasion of new materials, the discoveries in aerodynamics, the borrowings from the motor car and the airplane, the employment of power and electricity, and the fad for racing dinghies have brought about a veritable tidal wave of yacht invention. This book lists and explains more than five hundre3d gadgets and wrinkles that have proved useful in the handling of a yacht. It is a textbook of seamanship that will earn its cost many times in a single season." Illustrated. xii + 316 pages with index. Book is in GOOD or better condition. Dust jacket is in GOOD condition; protective plastic sleeve.

Skipjack: The Story of America's Last Sailing Oystermen
 Picture
Publisher: St. Martin's Press, 2009 New York.
ISBN: 9780312545321 Book. Book condition: Near Fine. Near Fine. Hardcover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall First edition, first printing. A Press Release announcing the publication of the book is laid in. "In this compelling portrait of a vanishing American tradition, Christopher White paints a vivid picture of the life on a 'skipjack' - a vintage wooden sailboat employed for dredging oysters since the nineteenth century - as seen through the eyes of North America's last sailing fishermen. With the boats now sequestered on a mere two islands in the Chesapeake Bay and the nation's greatest estuary - once renowned for its oysters, crabs, and striped bass - diminishing, both seafood and fishing boats are in dangerous decline. Spanning a year in the life of the dkipjack fleet, this epic tale follows three unforgettable captains who battle anture3 and one another to preserve their village communities and way of life. Stubborn survivors of the Age of Sail, they carry on ancient traditions, even as their wind-powered fleet is quickly dwindling.." Illustrated. 372 pages. Book is in NEAR FINE condition.
