Burgess, Robert H.
Chesapeake Circle
 Picture
Publisher: Cornell Maritime Press, Inc., 1965 Cambridge, MD.
Book. Book condition: Good to Very Good. Good. Hardcover 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall "The story of Chesapeake Bay is as extensive as the Bay itself, and the tales to be told as varied as its moods. In this sequel to his first book, This Was Chesapeake BGay, Robert Burgess has visualized the Chesapeake as a great, elliptical circle beginning at Baltimore, its chief port, and proceeding to the head of the Bay, down the Eastern Shore, through Capes Henry and Charles, and back up the Western Shore to the point of origin. The settings of these accounts range in temper from hurricane violence to the peace of a hidden cove; in place, from the open sea to the sailmaker's loft; in subject, from the coffee, coal and pineapple trades to live on a buoy tender. With a true sense of history, Mr. Burgess years ago began recording by word and by photograph the physical features and professions steadily passing from the Chesapeake scene; hence the special emphasis here on the Bay's commerce and craftsmen. These people and events, commonplace and overlooked by most contemporary observers, stand out today as significant parts of the Chesapeake heritage. All the stories relate to some aspect of Bay life, yet each stands independent, complete in itself, and the reader can start and stop with any story without thought of breaking continuity..Each essay is fully and handsomely illustrated by photographs from the author's collection and other sources. Thoroughly indexed, Chesapeake Circle is also a valuable addition to reference works concerning the Bay and its history.." Well illustrated with black-and-white photographs. 211 pages with index. Book is in GOOD or better condition. Dust jacket is in GOOD condition; shelfwear; now in protective plastic wrapper.
