Burgess, Robert H.
Chesapeake Circle
 Picture
Publisher: Cornell Maritime Press, Inc., 1965 Cambridge, MD.
Book. Book condition: Good to Very Good. Good. Hardcover 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall "The story of Chesapeake Bay is as extensive as the Bay itself, and the tales to be told as varied as its moods. In this sequel to his first book, This Was Chesapeake BGay, Robert Burgess has visualized the Chesapeake as a great, elliptical circle beginning at Baltimore, its chief port, and proceeding to the head of the Bay, down the Eastern Shore, through Capes Henry and Charles, and back up the Western Shore to the point of origin. The settings of these accounts range in temper from hurricane violence to the peace of a hidden cove; in place, from the open sea to the sailmaker's loft; in subject, from the coffee, coal and pineapple trades to live on a buoy tender. With a true sense of history, Mr. Burgess years ago began recording by word and by photograph the physical features and professions steadily passing from the Chesapeake scene; hence the special emphasis here on the Bay's commerce and craftsmen. These people and events, commonplace and overlooked by most contemporary observers, stand out today as significant parts of the Chesapeake heritage. All the stories relate to some aspect of Bay life, yet each stands independent, complete in itself, and the reader can start and stop with any story without thought of breaking continuity..Each essay is fully and handsomely illustrated by photographs from the author's collection and other sources. Thoroughly indexed, Chesapeake Circle is also a valuable addition to reference works concerning the Bay and its history.." Well illustrated with black-and-white photographs. 211 pages with index. Book is in GOOD or better condition. Dust jacket is in GOOD condition; shelfwear; now in protective plastic wrapper.

Book. Book condition: Very Good. Trade paperback 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall "In Our Waters & Beyond, Volume 2, provides another wonderful virtual voyage into the rich maritime past of our local waters and beyond. This collection of thirty 'spun yarns' of the deep highlights a host of 'new' dives into the archives by Adam Grohman on his continued effort to bring many lost or forgotten aspects of maritime history back to the 'surface.' Included are short histories that highlight shipwrecks, submarines, lost aircraft, deep-sea diving misadventures, naval battles, Trans-Atlantic voyages, and so much more. Learn about Captain Thomas Crapo, the wrecks fo the Sindia, Ajace, U.S.S. Baldwin, the missing ship's bell of the U.S.S. Crane, the loss of the C-5, the discovery of naval munitions in the depths of New York Harbor, and Professor Odlum's plunge into obscurity, just to name a few! The volume is lavishly illustrated with many archival photographs, postcards, and original drawings culled from various sources and the archives of the Underwater Historical Research Society. Copious footnotes and a detailed source listing for each chapter are also included. Prepare for your immersion into the deep. "Late on a clear winter night 327 years ago, a square-rigged English merchant ship slipped into a narrow creek near what is now Annapolis. After a voyage from London of seventy-five days, the Constant Friendship had arrived at the settlement of Providence in Maryland. One of the large fleet of ships engaged in the transatlantic tobacco trade, the Constant Friendship would winter at Providence while taking on cargo for the trip home. Thanks to the ship's mate and navigator, Edward Rhodes, we can read an actual account of the Constant Friendship's voyage, unremarkable in its time, but extremely important for us today.."
