Wagner, Anthony
Pedigree and Progress: Essays in the Genealogical Interpretation of History
 Picture
Publisher: Phillimore & Co. LTD, 1975 London.
ISBN: 0850331986 Book. Book condition: Good. Poor. Hardcover 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall "Sir Anthony Wagner has been described as the greatest scholar to have served in the College of Arms since Camden. A new book from him is always and event, and this one has the extra interest that it embodies something of Sir anthony's personal philosophy, as well as his usual high level of scholarship.. In this book, Garter takes this and other lines of thought further in a wide ranging study of the contribution of genealogy and heraldry to the understanding of history. Illustrating his arguments with more than 90 pedigrees from a variety of societies and periods, he takes examples from classical antiquity, Persia, Armenia and Crusader Principalities and shows the classical connections with barbarian pedigrees. Perhaps of greater interest to the general reader are English examples showing the wide connections of the Royal Family (many little-known, such as thelateral link between Elizabeth I and Shakespeare), the close community of the early London merchant patriciate, and the interconnections of the tradesmen of Windsor and Eton with their neighbours in the College during the 18th and 19th centuries. Sir Anthony develops his theme from these examples, making clear both how he believes that genealogy can illuminate the study of history and also his personal interpretation of history in the light of that illumination. A provocative interpretation is to be expected, and the reader will not be disappointed. Sir Anthony questions the values of the 'classless socity' and of 'progressives'; defending a stratified but fluid society as likelier to promote human happiness and true progress than the 'levelling trick' of egalitarian politicians and materialists." 333 pages with index. Book is in GOOD condition. Some names in several lineage charts have been highlighted, apparently by a former owner tracing his own ancestors. Dust jacket is in POOR condition; present but torn into two halves along fold.

 Picture
Publisher: George B. Wilson, 1976 Baltimore, MD.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall "The writer has attempted to identify and characterize every descendant of Lewis DeRochbrune, a physician, who came to Kent Island, Talbot (now Queen Anne's) County, Maryland about 1684 or earlier. Family tradition insists that he was a Frenchman. That may well prove correct but this writer did not attempt verification. Apparently Dr. DeRochbrune was not a British subject when he arrived in Maryland for he was naturalized in 1694. The surname is preserved today only as a second or middle given name of several descendants; not one bearing the surname has been discovered.." xv + 283 pages. Book is in GOOD condition.
