F. Beale, superintendent of Indian affairs in California, and Gwinn Harris Heap, from Missouri to California in 1853. The narrative records the first expedition made through a large portion of the territory. Through the influence of Thomas Hart Benton, Edward F. Beale conducted an independent railroad survey complete detached from the official Pacific railroad surveys done the same year. Aided by Heap, his press agent, Beale publicized the 38th parallel as the best route to the Pacific.
