First Edition Thick hardback 12mo, about 7.5 inches tall, in red cloth stamped in gilt and blind. 539 pages with frontis engraving. A thorough view of the Far East, including a very early look at Japan only a few years after it was opened to the west, by one of the preeminent travel writers of the period. BAL 19650. The contemporary cloth shows appropriate wear with corners worn through, chipping at the spine ends, a tear to the cloth of about 1.5 inches at the upper rear hinge. The binding is sound although it is slightly cocked. Modest foxing to the frontis, tissue guard, and illustrated title, but very little otherwise. The endpapers are modestly toned and the front free endpaper has an edge tear of about a half an inch. Hardcover Hardcover Good
