Second Annual Sale of HORSES IN TRAINING at HOLLYWOOD PARK: Monday, July 20, 1964
 Picture
Publisher: Cladwell-Heerman Sales Co. Ontario California 1964.
Flexible heavy red paper covers with gilt title and embossed vignette of racehorse and rider. No page numbers, 100 young animals were offered in the sale, Each entry is offered with breeding and a blurb (some with a rather amusing 'spin.') Numerous owners/breeders represented including N.B. Hunt, J.W. Heaton, Jack Harris, Jess Hadden, Flying M Stable, C.V. Whitney, Eldon L. Smith, and includes the sale of Mr. Thong by Roman Sandal, out of Focus Point. Corner crease and light edgewear to cover, gilt a little faded. A few page corners creased. Someone present at the sale made small ink notations on some of the entries, including 'probly lame' (sic), 'unsound?' and 'utter rubbish.' (As I said, there is some quiet salesmanship apparent in the blurbs.) A nice little piece of racing history! SPORTS 3217 First Edition Paperbound Very Good Condition 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall Misc.

A Stud Farm Diary
 Picture
Publisher: J. A. Allen & Co. Ltd, 1973 London.
Book. Book condition: Good. Good. Hardcover 16mo - over 5 - 6" tall "More than forty years ago, it was the writer's pleasure to have served for better than a decade as Stud Manager for the Labrot family in Maryland. There the Holly Beach Farm spread over more than 2500 acres along the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. It was a happy association, one whose wide range of responsibilities afforded a young man with a taste for journalism ample material for contributions the then new breeding magazine, the Blood-Horse. For more than a year this magazine published weekly a diary, wherein were recounted the day-by-day activities of the manger of the Labrot stud farm, his family, and his loyal corps of assistants. For obvious reasons a non-de-plume (Nothing Venture) was used. The location of the farm, its name and those of the horses thereon were likewise disguised.." 135 pages. The first series bound in contemporary calf rubbed, hinges split and some boards detached, lacking the title page in vol 1. The balance aprt from 10 vols, bound or rebacked to give uniform appearance of full light brown calf gilt with contrasting leather labels. The non-uniform vols vary in condition from good to worn, some spines defective & one or two boards loose. In general, a remarkable run of this essential publication, seldom found in such completeness. Even single volumes prior to 1800 are of great rarity.

Gordon Jones to Win! The Professional Method of Speed Handicapping

Publisher: Karman Communications, 1976 Huntington Beach, CA.
Book. Book condition: Good. Trade paperback 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall "Here's the method that actually beat the races in print in the West's largest afternoon newspaper for four straight years..Lots of folks claim they can beat the races. But here is the incredible story of a modern-day handicapping genius who proved to millions he could beat the races year in and year out - and did it in print! Professor Gordon Jones actually took a job as a public turf handicapper in the West's largest afternoon newspaper seven years ago to prove he's the best in the world at his profession. And for an amazing four-year period he beat Santa Anita for hundreds of dollars on small wagers printed right in his newspaper 24 to 48 hours before the races were run. He established all-time records for total winners and total payoffs in 1974 and 1975. And he did it all right in front of millions of readers. He led 30 competing newspaper selectors in total winners and total payoffs over the last three years at Santa Anita, Hollywood Park, Del Mar, Pomona Fair and Oak Tree. He holds the all-time record for most winners and biggest total payoffs in a single year by any handicapper in the 35 years that horses have been running in Southern California. He holds the record for most winners ever picked in one season at Santa Anita (208) and Oak Tree-at-Santa Anita (67 in only 20 days). He holds the modern West Coast record of picking at least one winner a day in print for 126 consecutive racing programs stretching over almost six months. Here, in this easy-to-read book, Professor Jones details for you how he beats the races and produces more winners paying more money than you ever thought possible!" 154 pages.
