Book. Book condition: Good. Good. Hardcover 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall "Here is the book for which thousands have been waiting--another anthology from some of the finest and most inspired utterances of that supremely eloquent being, Silver Birch, world-famous spirit guide of Hannen Swaffer's home circle. All over the world people have paid tribute to this guide for the comfort, help and guidance he has provided to them. He is a thinker, always a major key, and with immeasurable depth. His utterances on truth, wisdom, spirit, life, love, death and the purpose of being are without parallel in modern philosophy. Always he insists on the unerring constancy of the Law--the natural ordinances which control every facet of universal activity. The significant fact is the utter simplicity of his language. He expresses great an noble truths in phrases a child can understand. Lucid, effortless, lit with spiritual conviction, his prose glitters with perfection. Tributes have been paid to the mastery of his utterances, comparing them with the oratory of Churchill. Here, selected from his incomparable treasury, are its finest gems." 120 pages. Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall Subtitle: Being the History of the Haydon Hunt and Many Other Packs, Together with Songs, Stories and Legends of Sport in the Border County. Introduction by J. Fairfax-Blakeborough, M.C. The Haydon Hunt is one of the traditional fox hunts of England, having celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2009. "..The author of this book has done good service by collecting from inevitable loss, the story of this far Northumbrian Haydon Hunt. Very painstakingly he has chronicled the evolution of the pack and much of interest by the way. Though in the main local, the history as a whole is pretty much that of many other packs, and similarly the tradition is also the same, as is the local patriotism. Now in sport-and particularly fox-hunting-tradition and local patriotism (for there is a distinct local as well as national patriotism) count for much..This Haydon tradition began in the very early days and was cemented by the frequent dining, and wining, of men who loved the freedom of the open air, the horses, hounds and the congenial company of those whose tastes jumped with their own.." Illustrated with 12 black and white photographic plates. 250 pages with index. Book is in GOOD condition. No dust jacket.

Self, Margaret Cabell
In Ireland
 Picture
Publisher: A. S. Barnes & Company, 1954 New York.
Book. Book condition: Good. Good. Hardcover 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall "In Ireland is the entertaining account by one of the best known authorities on horses in this country of her fulfillment of that ambition common to all horsemen: to hunt in Ireland. Having put the dream to rest for several years while raising her family, Margaret Cabell Self decided at a grandmotherly age to make her wish come true. The trip she made (alone) resulted not only in a fresh look at hunting in Ireland, but also a revelation to her of many facets of the country and its people. Hunting (at least in Ireland), she discovered, is the most democratic sport in the world. Hunts are attended by mixed congregations of noble and worker meeting briefly on equal terms; rubbing elbows at the same gaps, pursuing a common goal. Whereas hunting in the United States without an invitation from the Master is unthinkable, it is customary to disregard this type of formality in Ireland; everyone manages to get into the act. Moreover, she discovered that not only are the traditions surrounding the sport, as practiced by the Irish, striking; so are the conditions of the hunt itself. Tales of exasperating obstacles and frightful spills, she found, were not understated. Riding on Irish hirelings in nine hunts, each in a different part of the country, she became convinced that an American-trained horse would find the terrain a nightmare almost impossible to overcome. The trenches, drains, and ditches have straight sides and often range up to eight feet in width; most banks (known as 'hairy' banks) are covered with gorse, thorn bushes, or a variety of small trees. Banks are frequently of the 'razor' type, narrow at the top and slippery with mud. The account of her travels is richly detailed in reference to the towns and surrounding areas she visited during her trip. Some of the most beautiful views of Ireland are seen from the vantage point of a woman with an eye for natural beauty..The prospective fox hunter with Mrs. Self's ambition will find In Ireland to be a very practical guide to localities, customs, and other matters vital to a visitor to that country. This beautifully illustrated book makes an ideal gift for horseman and traveller alike." 217 pages with index. Book is in GOOD condition. Dust jacket is in GOOD condtiion; edgewear.
