Publisher: University of North Texas Press Denton, TX 1994.
Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket 1st Edition Hardcover Includes bibliographical references and index. The Texas Folklore Society had its beginnings at the A&M-Texas football game in 1909. John Avery Lomax, a forty-two-year-old A&M English teacher from Harvard and Leonidas Warren Payne, a thirty-six year old UT English professor and linguist, met to discuss establishing a folklore society, as had been suggested by George Lyman Kittredge of Harvard. The announced purpose of the society was to collect and make known to the public songs and ballads, superstitions, signs and omens, cures and peculiar customs, legends, dialects, games, plays, and dances, and riddles and proverbs. This second volume to the Texas Folklore Society history covers from the McCarthy era to the end of the wild and woolly sixties. Anderson, Ken
Crime in Texas
 Picture
Publisher: University of Texas Press 1997.
As New 1st Edition Softcover Inscribed by Ken Anderson. The author's royalties are being donated to various children's charities. The Texas criminal justice system has come a long way since the early 1990s, when a vicious crime spree by paroled murderer Kenneth McDuff convinced lawmakers and citizens that the system had broken down. In this book, District Attorney Ken Anderson describes major reforms that followed the McDuff case as he provides a complete overview of the criminal justice system in Texas. Using simple language that any citizen can understand, Anderson describes all aspects of the system--officials (police, prosecutors, judges), criminal procedure, criminal law, criminal punishments, victims' rights, and the juvenile system. He illustrates his points with real-life stories of crime and punishment. Throughout the book, Anderson emphasizes two facts--that crime prevention programs, stricter law enforcement, and increased prison space have dramatically lowered the crime rate in Texas and that citizen activism is very effective in bringing reform to the criminal justice system. This book will be essential reading for everyone--public and professional- 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 196 pages; Signed by Author

You Can't Do That, Dan Moody! The Klan Fighting Governor Of Texas
 Picture
Publisher: Eakin Press Austin 1998.
As New 1st Edition; 2nd Printing Softcover The Ku Klux Klan cast its dark shadow on America in the 1920's. Gaining strength, not only in Texas but nationwide, their political power and reign of terror grew as they won election after election. There were few arrests and no convictions. It seemed no one could stop the Klan. No one could stop the hate, and no one could stop the violence. No one except Dan Moody, Texas' youngest governor. He was raised in the heart of what is known as the "blackland", referring to the rich black soil of Taylor, Texas. His childhood home is now a museum. Daniel J. Moody was born on June 1, 1893, to Daniel James Moody and Nancy Elizabeth Robertson Moody in the then-fast-growing railroad town of Taylor, where he would spend his childhood. He attended The University of Texas from 1910-14, where he was a member of the Hildebrand Law Society and later vice president of the Cofer Law Society. Without completing his law degree, he left school, passed the bar exam, and formed a law partnership with Harris Melasky, a childhood friend, in Taylor. ; 1571683585 8vo - 8" to 9" tall; 165 pages; 30418 -- About the author: Ken Anderson, a lawyer by day and author on nights and weekends, has written several other books. He has written and spoken extensively about Gov. Dan Moody. And with Tom Swift co-wrote a play based on this book. The play is performed periodically in the same courtroom, in the same courthouse, as the original Klan trials. He has made over a hundred speaking appearances to schools, teachers' workshops and general audiences about Moody. He has also done dozens of TV interviews about Moody including an appearance on C-Span's Book-TV.

 Picture
Publisher: Texas State Historical Association Austin, TX 1998.
Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket 1st Edition Hardcover Signed by author. No Texas archetype is more indelibly stamped on the public perception than the Texas oil man--a shrewd, flamboyant figure captured in the character of J. R. Ewing in the long-running television series "Dallas." During the 1980s when this program was playing worldwide, reinforcing the stereotyp of the oil man as a conservative, unprincipled rogue, another Texas oil man named J. R. (J. R. Parten) was quietly concluding a remarkable career that spanned most of the twentieth century. ; 0876111665 DJ in mylar; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; 668 pages; 17656; Signed by Author

Caro, Robert A.
Means Of Ascent The Years of Lyndon Johnson
 Picture
Publisher: Knopf NY 1990.
Very Good in Very Good dust jacket 1st Edition Hardcover Second volume in the series of three "the years of lyndon johnson" biographies, the first volume of which won the National Book Critics Circle Award. The story of the rise to national power of a desperately poor young man from the Texas Hill Country reveals Johnson's almost mythic personality as seen at its most nakedly ambitious. This book carries the President-to-be from the aftermath of his devastating defeat in his 1941 campaign for the Senate through his service in World War II to the foundation of his fortune. "Booklist Magazine" review says, among other things, that Caro is frequently so slanted against Johnson that LBJ becomes a tragic figure, sympathetic in a way that Caro never intends. ; 0394528352 Minor edgewear. The Ladder Of Rivers: The Story Of I. P. (Print) Olive
 Picture
Publisher: Sage Books 1962.
Very Good+ in Good+ dust jacket 1st Edition Hardcover SIGNED BY AUTHOR on half title page. This book is adequately documented as an authentic work of history. It is perhaps the only western story so burdened by gun fights and killings, all substantiated by court records, that the author has simply tucked many of them into the Notes and Sources at the book's end. These add greatly to the book's historical worth without detracting from its readability. The book is well-illustrated with original photographs from the Olive family records, most of them heretofore unpublished. Edgeworn, chipped and lightly soiled (more so on backstrip) DJ in new mylar.  Picture
Publisher: Random House NY 1952.
Very Good in Fair dust jacket 2nd Printing Hardcover The modern oil industry was born on a hill in southeastern Texas. This dome was known by several names, but the one that stuck was "Spindletop". Through the latter half of the 19th century, Pennsylvania had been the most oil-productive state in the country. All that changed on January 10th, 1901 in Beaumont, Texas. DJ, edgeworn, chipped and stained on inside, in new mylar cover. Cloth boards in red and black, depicting the gusher.
