This is one of Bagby's early Inspector Schmidt murder mystery novels. "The corpse with the sunburned back gave Inspector Schmidt a great deal of trouble. Not only was the sunburn all wrong, but there was something in the belt of its white canvas pants which shouldn't have been there. Our incompletely sunburned corpse turned up on the Coney Island beach late one August evening. It was found lying on the sand near the boardwalk shortly after a drenching rain had driven the crowds off the sands. No one had seen the corpse before the rain started. No symptoms of drowning or of physical violence were in evidence. How had it gotten there, far beyond the wash of the tide, in the short interval between the rainstorm and its discovery? Then there was the matter of Otto Schwellenbach's tongue, and its strange appearance in a Coney Island restaurant.
