The Viking Rocket Story
Publisher: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1955 New York.
Book. Book condition: Very Good. Fair. Hardcover Signed by Author(s) 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall First Edition (stated). SIGNED by author on half-title page! The front endpaper bears an unsigned bookplate which reads: "This book is presented with the compliments of the Martin Company of Baltimore, Maryland at the opening of Viking Hall. The Hayden Planetarium, New York..June 30, 1955." "This is the story of a rocket, a rocket called Viking, the largest American rocket to explore the upper atmosphere. The story tells how the rocket was conceived, how it was designed and built. It takes the reader to White Sands Proving Ground, across the desert to the launching area, into the massive concrete blockhouse, and finally to a spot directly behind the Viking firing desk. It re-creates the tension-filled minutes as the X-time count moves toward zero, the dramatic takeoff, and the seconds of suspense as the rocket roars upward. Each rocket has a history, almost a personality, that sets it apart from the others. The fir4st Viking was a frustrating struggle, the fourth a colorful episode at sea. Viking 6, launched at midnight, created a mystery and Viking 8 taught a lesson never to be forgotten. Finally there is Viking 10: a rocket saved from the borderline of disaster, saved to fulfill its mission, to ascend to a record altitude. Through Mr. Rosen's skillful writing, the reader comes to kow the men who build and fire the Viking rockets. He sees the rocket through their eyes and shares their experiences, their hours of frustration, their moments of triumph. Illustrated with diagrams and thirty-two pages of striking photographs." xii + 242 pages. Book is in GOOD to VERY GOOD condition. Dust jacket is in FAIR to GOOD condition; wear to bottom front edge.
