Tooke, John Horne.
Epea l'teroenta, or The Diversions of Purley [Pteroenta] (Parts I and II).

Publisher: London: Published by author, 1798, 1805..
Second Edition Two quarto volumes, in full contemporary leather, spine titles on black morocco in gilt; Greek key borders in gilt on all covers. 534 and 516 pages respectively plus index to both parts at end of part II. A nice copy of this famous work of English etymology. The first volume first appeared in 1786, this is the second edition of that volume and a first edition of volume II. The bindings are sound; the text is clean but for the very rare spot of foxing; previous owner bookplate on the front pastedown of each volume, that of "George Moffatt" (there were 19th century political figures with that name in both England and Canada). The rear cover of volume II has an abrasion with the loss of surface material about one by three inches. The covers are otherwise somewhat mottled with craquelure, tips worn through to the boards. Spine compartments (6 of them) ruled by gilt Greek keys and swags, with spine labels and 4 gilt devices, but not raised bands. Very attractive set. Hardcover Hardcover Very Good
