[Trinity College, Hartford, Ct., has title which continues: "to which are prefixed a sketch of the history of English poetry, a life of Chaucer, and observations on his language and versification by W. Greatheed Lewis."] The same contents are included in this copy, which contains a glossary based upon but with new material and "a great number of words". This is a significant edition in the Chaucer tradition, yet very uncommon: COPAC lists but one and OCLC three. Bound in contemporary 3/4 leather; very good. stock#LdeP038.

Black cloth hardcover with lavish art nouveaux decoration in gilt, in matching dust jacket and housed in a black paper-covered slipcase, publisher's review notice laid in. The is a facsimile edition of the Dent edition of 1909, which incorporated the complete Caxton text, and which introduced a fine young illustrator by the name of Aubrey Beardsley (he was barely 20 years old at the time he took this commission, which made him a household name). This edition contains over 1, 000 examples of Beardsley's illustrations and designs, including ten illustrations that were omitted from the first edition. The book and dust jacket are about as new, the slipcase has some very tiny rubs to color at a few corners, easily recolored.
