Dickens, Charles
The Chimes: A Goblin Story
Publisher: Lea and Blanchard, Philadelphia, 1845.
First American Edition Hardcover. Condition: Poor+/None Linen cloth over boards, faded gilt and blindstamped decoration and titling on front, 12mo. Decorative blindstamped border on back as well. Covers are stained, corners bumped and spine ends worn and chipped. Missing ffep, front board repaired with tape where hinge cracked inside; outside still attached. Owner's name inked on front and rear pastedowns and title page; one on a rear end paper in pencil. Four newspaper clippings pasted on to end papers, one dealing with Dickens' writing method and one on Dickens' 'dummy' books, each creating shadows on opposite pages. Variable scattered foxing throughout, with many of the pages toned only in the text block, while the illustrated pages have mostly escaped this fate. Perhaps 8 pages with pencil lines in margins. Page edges marred by a small scrape. Some tiny pinholes from pg. 95 through to endpapers. Overall, still readable, though no longer lovely. INSIDE: 12 captivating full page B&W illustrations by D. Maclinse, R. Doyle, J. Leech, and C. Stanfield. Written and published in 1844, a year after A Christmas Carol, as another contracted Christmas story and conceived while in Genoa, Italy, upon hearing the crash and clamor of the church bells there, Dickens determined to write The Chimes as striking a 'blow for the poor, ' according to his first biographer, John Forster. Language: English. Pages: 96
