[Deane, Sir Anthony] Edited and introduced by Brian Lavery
Deane's Doctrine of Naval Architecture, 1670
 Picture
Publisher: (London) Conway Maritime Press, Ltd. (1981).
First printing. Quarto, Hardcover, black & white illustrations, plans, 128 pages. Condition: Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket in Mylar protector.
Deane was a Master Shipwright at Harwich and Portsmouth in the late 17th century, and this treatise was originally commissioned by Samuel Pepys to explain the intricacies of designing a major warship of that period. The work is very detailed and thus provides a valuable record of Restoration ship design. In addition to reproductions of original illustrations there are appendices and a set of plans of Deane's most famous ship, the 70-gun Resolution. This copy belonged to noted naval architect Thomas C. Gillmer, and bears his bookplate on front pastedown and name penned on front free endpaper. Bound in dark blue textured paper over boards with spine lettered in gilt. Shallow bumps to top fore corners. Jacket has some shallow edge wrinkles. Military History

Sailing Theory and Practice

Publisher: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1964 New York.
Book. Book condition: Good to Very Good. Good. Hardcover 4to - over 9 - 12" tall "A scientific analysis, with 335 drawings and photographs of the aerodynamic, hydrodynamic, and other design factors which define a yacht's behavior. The author of this book is a Polish scientist and sailor who possesses an extraordinary range of talents that not only combine a highly professional knowledge of aerodynamics with intensive actual experience in sailing and racing, but also embrace an unusual ability to illustrate his theories and analyses with his own clear-cut graphs and drawings. Some years ago Marchaj wrote and illustrated a book on this subject in Polish. It quickly gained him international recognition in the field. He was given an opportunity to study and conduct research at the great English experimental laboratory in Southampton. He devised many new approaches to scientific work in wind tunnels and water tanks and, while conducting these experiments over a period of some two years, worked with English friends on a translated and greatly expanded version of his book. The result is the present handsome volume with nearly three hundred drawings and diagrams and forty odd photographs." x + 450 pages with index.
