A Collection of Interesting Tracts, Explaining Several Important Points of Scripture Doctrine
 Picture
Publisher: J. Soule and T Mason, 1817 New York.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 24mo - over 5 - 5" tall "Published from the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States." "Several of the following Tracts were formerly published in the Form of Discipline of the Methodist Episcopal Church; but as this is revised and re-printed once in four years; and as many wish to have every new edition; therefore the General Conference of 1812, ordered these tracts to be left out, that the Discipline might be small and cheap. At the same time they directed their Book-Stewards to select and publish these tracts in a separate volume. In conformity to these directions, you are now presented with a small volume of Tracts, treating on points of Doctrine, on which the Christian world is greatly divided, (viz) Predestination, Election, Reprobation, Perseverance, Imputed Righteousness, and Christian Perfection. Let the candid reader carefully examine these, and judge for himself; and if he should not find a solution of all his doubts, we presume his prejudices will be softened; and he will have the satisfaction to know that he has examined, what are the real sentiments of his fellow Christians, before he pronounces them true or false." 360 pages. Arthur, William
The Tongue of Fire, or, The True Power of Christianity
 Picture
Publisher: Light & Life Press, 0.
Book. Book condition: Very Good. Good to Very Good. Hardcover 12mo - over 6 - 7" tall No date; ca. 1950s. This is a facsimile reproduction of an earlier Abingdon-Cokesbury Press edition. "Rev. William Arthur was an English Wesleyan preacher of three generations ago. He was recognized in England and America as a preacher and writer of extraordinary powers. The Tongue of Fire was written while sickness preyed upon the body of the author. It was inspired by a heart aflame with divine love. No wonder it has been regarded as a Christian classic. It has been translated into various languages and has blessed a multitude of people. For one with literary taste it offers truth dressed in most attractive English. For one with spiritual taste it offers strong meat to build strong muscles on the inner man of the heart. If any should criticize Arthur for dwelling at length upon the baptism of the Spirit as a possibility set forth in the promises spoken by John the Baptist and Christ, before saying anything about the practical outcome of the baptism, he might be answered in the language of the author himself, used in rebuke of those who thought that 'nothing particularly practical was being done in the Ecumenical Conference of Methodism' being held in London in 1881. He said 'They are only in the engine house, where there is not a spool being spun, not a web being woven, and not a tissue being dyed. There is nothing being done but generating power. The first part of this unusual book shows where and how the power is generated. The latter and larger part shows how the power is hitched to all the practicalities of life. It is an event to have Arthur's production offered to the Christian church again. It has an undying message. Many of the present generation never heard of this invaluable work. It should have a wide reading among those who are eager to avail themselves of their highest privileges in Christ." 253 pages. Book is in VERY GOOD condition. Dust jacket is in GOOD or better condition; shelfwear.

Atkinson, John
The Class Leader, His Work and How To Do It
 Picture
Publisher: Hunt & Eaton, 1889 New York.
Book. Book condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 12mo - over 6 - 7" tall "The class-meeting is a peculiar, conspicuous, and powerful agency of Methodism. Class Leaders are invaluable and indispensable co-workers with the ministry. It is remarkable that an institution of such potency, and a class of laborers so numerous, gifted, and useful, have not received larger attention from Methodist writers. OPnly two or three small volumes and a few tracts, specifically devoted to this subject, are extant in the whole range of American Methodist publications, and of these scarcely any were written within the last two decades. A fresh, practical, and comprehensive treatise is, therefore, an acknowledged want. Whether the present volume shall, in any degree, supply this want, its readers will determine. Its material has been carefully collaged, and its preparation throughout has been painstaking. It is offered to the Church with the hope that it may, to some extent, supplement the too few excellent works on this subject.." 338 pages. Book is in VERY GOOD condition. No dust jacket.

 Picture
Publisher: The Wesley Press, 1960 Marion, IL.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover Signed by Author(s) 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall SIGNED by Floyd Banker, author, on front endpaper. "The very name of India arrests attention. It is a land of colorful and strange fascinations. From almost any point of view India's strategic importance increases in this day of world crisis. Although having about one half of the United States of America's area it has twice as many people. It has been estimated that approximately one-seventh of the world's population is found in India...The aim of this book is not to present facts without regard to their significance to a spiritual program, but to recount those things which contributed to the manifestation of God's presence among His people and the effects upon individuals and the movements of the spiritual groups when God moved in such mighty power. The revival spirit which set souls ablaze with a passion for the winning of their fellowmen paid big dividends on their investment..The burden and passion of Brother Banker's heart - and the purpose of this book - is to assist you and me to catch the vision of India's needs and share the burden and passion of those who have seen and felt the extent of India's spiritual destitution and need of the Gospel.." ISBN: 097043930x Book. Book condition: Good. Trade paperback 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall "..What follows is a brief attempt to tell the story of how the Peninsula-Delaware Conference came to be. We are writing with the conviction that not only is history fascinating in its own right, but also that to catch the vision of where we are going, we must also have a clear picture of whence we came. The story which we tell here has been told before and we are not trying to supplant our predecessors..This short history focuses on the Peninsula-Delaware Conference. This means that our narrative includes only those branches of the Methodist movement which are part of The United Methodist Church. We know there are many important stories which lie outside this limited focus, but we have neither the time nor the space to attempt to tell them all. Also, this focus led us to end our narrative at 1965..." Illustrated. vi + 120 pages. Book is in GOOD condition. Paper wrappers.

Silverbrook Methodist Church 1880-1965
 Picture
Publisher: Silverbrook Methodist Church, 1965 Wilmington, DE.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall "..This book has been written in the spirit of truth as that truth dwells in a heart and mind filled, for the purposes of this book, with the sunshine of a growing love and joy for the Silverbrook whose life it tries to describe. No matter all that. If I say that the story of Silverbrook Church begins on a pretty day in June, 1880, I am almost absolutely certain that my statement is truthful in fact as well as in spirit, for the story of Silverbrook begins at an open-air worship service under a beech tree in a meadow, and that crowd would have swat in rain to take part in an evangelistic service, even eighty-five years ago when men were men? (I'd be almost willing to bet it was a sunny day, but I won't bet, because you know the Methodist stand on gambling, and Silverbrook is, after all, a Methodist church.) I believe that men were men - frail and fallible humans -even then, in 1880. I believe that people are people forever and that they have been for a long, long time. This history will show other things to be perennial, too, things other than people. Water in the basement of the church and occasional trouble with janitorial service are as perennial as the desire to worship God; the questionable behavior of boys in the worship service and certain abuses of the privilege of smoking as perennial as concern about the Heavenly Kingdom. That is not to deny that changes have occurred during Silverbrook's eighty-five years. Chang, too, continues forever. The Silverbrook carriage shed has long been replaced by a garage, gas lamps by electric, open air meetings by a half-million dollar plant. The story of Silverbrooki has romance, humor, sadness, sacrifice - everything that you'll find in the story of any life well-lived and still quite alive.." Truths That Transfigure: Faith Tonics

Publisher: God's Revivalist Press, 1927 Cincinnati, OH.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 12mo - over 6 - 7" tall George B. Kulp was a prominent Methodist minister of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He became nationally known as an evangelist and leader of the International Apostolic Holiness Union. "Fifteen sermons for the saints published at request of laity and ministry." "A layman of experience and interest in Christian work wrote me a letter in which he said, 'Brother Kulp you have a number of books of sermons that are for preachers and sinners. Why not give us some of your sermons to the saints? I will take two hundred copies and dispose of them if you will.' A minister, one of the most successful pastors in the Holiness ranks in Ohio, said that if I would have them printed, he would take one hundred copies. I also have received numerous requests for a book of my poems, which have been published in the last ten years in the Revivalist. In answer to the call, which I believe is in the Divine approval, I herewith, by the grace of the Publishers of God's Revivalist, send forth these sermons with an eye that is single to the glory of God. May His blessing rest on every reader of these messages and may such derive comfort and blessing is the humble prayer of Your Brother and Servant in Christ, George B. Kulp." 246 pages. The Arminian Emphases
 Picture
Publisher: Owosso College, 0 Owosso, MI.
Book. Book condition: Good. Trade paperback 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall M. L. Goodman Lecture Series Volume I. "True Holiness". Preface by M. L. Goodman. "..Dr. Roy S. Nicholson is a man of great mental and moral stature. For many years he has been recognized as one of the best informed men in America on the life and teachings of John Wesley. Inasmuch as this lecture series was titled 'The Arminian Emphases' it was the opinion of the Lectureship Committee that no better exponent of these great doctrines could be found. A careful perusal of these lectures will reveal his deep spiritual insights, the breadth of his mental grasp, his invincible logic, his incisive precision to clearly define, his scholarly approach, and his great wealth of experience from which to draw. He places the holiness message in its proper focus. He clearly shows its relevancy to our day and context of life. In these days when the fine lines of doctrinal distinction are being more or less merged, and in many instances cleverly obliterated; it is very stimulating to sit at the feet of this exegete and absorb his masterful presentations. With great versatility he sets forth the techniques of translating and implementing these Bible doctrines into everyday life and experience. I commend this book to all lovers of, and adherents to, the Wesleyan Arminian persuasion.." 167 pages. Book is in GOOD condition; underlining on pages 116 to 122 only; shelfwear. Paper wrappers.

The Soul Digger, or, Life and Times of William Taylor
 Picture
Publisher: Taylor University Press, 1928 Upland, IN.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall John Paul is President of Taylor University. William Taylor was an American Missionary Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, elected in 1884. Taylor University, a Christian college in Indiana, carries his name. "..The object of our volume is to fix the historic facts for future generations, and to introduce in true perspective a man whose unselfishness and intelligent zeal will stimulate the nobler aspiration of those who discover him. A by-product of the volume, we dare to say, will be first class entertainment and spiritual uplift to the reader. As we combed the archives and learned of the amazing exertions, self denials and achievements of William Taylor's life, rejecting compensations that might have been his, finally to die poor, and denying himself the sweets of a home life that he seemed to love more than did the average man, the author's mind continually recalled the unintended compliment of the priests, when Jesus was dying: 'He saved others, himself he cannot save.'" 318 pages. The Methodist Publishing House: A History, Volume I. Beginnings to 1870
 Picture
Publisher: Abingdon Press, 1968 New York.
Book. Book condition: Very Good. Good. Hardcover 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall "Drawing its information almost entirely from primary sources heretofore unresearched, The Methodist Publishing House: A History delineates the story of the first hundred years of American Methodist publishing in context with the events of American history. Indeed, quite often the quotations themselves - from early newspapers, private papers, journals, and business documents -tell the story of this denominational publishing enterprise as it affected, and was affected by, American history from the colonial period through the Civil War. That religion is not only the foundation stone but also part of the framework of American culture is seldom more clearly set forth than in this history of the first century of Methodist publishing in America, 1769 to 1870. Specifically the book deals with three Methodist publishing programs headquartered in New York, Cincinnati, Chicago, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Nashville and San Francisco. Books published, editorial policies of church newspapers, manufacturing methods, and sales techniques, as well as the personalities of the men who directed the publishing program from the days of George Washington to those of Ulysses S. Grant, comprise the content of this volume. It is illustrated by extensive verbal reference to source materials and by contemporaneous paintings, drawings and engravings." xv + 583 pages with index.  Picture
Publisher: Exposition Press, 1952 New York.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall "It is hoped that readers of this monograph will get at least a sympathetic view of a Church founded by erstwhile bondsmen, the majority of whom could not write their names, and whose backs bore lasting brands of slave ownership. Their stiffened and hardened fingers made cross-marks as they touched the pen, as Charles the Great had once impressed his signet ring. This is the story of a Church which existed seventy-eight years under the slave regime and eighty-odd years of freedom without liberty. The writer, whose grandparents were slaves, will feel amply rewarded should just one reader experience somewhat the heart-tug and thrill of exultation which he had from time to time over a period of fifteen years while trying to prepare that story for the press.." xx + 251 pages with index. Stevens, Abel
A Compendious History of American Methodism
 Picture
Publisher: Phillips & Hunt, 1867 New York.
Book. Book condition: Good to Very Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall Stevens provides a detailed history of the Methodist Episcopal Church. "The Book Concern has for some years been spending liberally to provide the Church with a Standard History of Methodism. I issued first a History of General Methodism in three volumes..; second a particular History of the Methodist Episcopal Church in four volumes - the fourth volume just out. These works haver received the strongest indorsements not only by Methodists, but other authorities on both sides of the Atlantic. They meet a great want of the Church, and a demand of the general religious public. The author employed by the Concern to prepare them - Dr. Abel Stevens - has devoted his utmost power to them, and has, by thorough research, added more than one third to the data of our history, as given by preceding writers. These works are now a staple part of the property of the Church's own Publishing House; they have cot it much, and will yield much to its interest if properly patronized. There are many of our people, however, who cannot spare the means for works as large as these. It has been our design from the beginning, therefore, to present them in cheaper form, that the whole Church may be supplied with them..That abridgment is presented in the present volume, by the author, with additions, bringing the narrative down to the Centenary of the Church, with full accounts of the results of the hundred years of its history, and life-like sketches of its representative men.." Straughn, James H.
Inside Methodist Union
 Picture
Publisher: The Methodist Publishing House, 1958 Nashville, TN.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover Signed by Author(s) Signed by the author on front endpaper! James Straughn is a bishop of The Methodist Church. "The following narrative is a realistic story of Methodist unification as I know it. It is not a history of Methodism, nor is it the final story of unification. There were three churches in the movement, and to have the full record we need it told from the viewpoint of each. It is inevitable that a writer will be influenced by his own background and convictions. Later on, some historian will take the three viewpoints and bring to balance the history of Methodist union..This writing attempts to accent the contribution made by the Methodist Protestant Church without the least depreciation of the larger contribution of the other two churches and is given without apology. It is hoped nothing in it will seem argumentative or combative. There is no desire to open old wounds. But to understand Methodist union and the problems incident to it, one must know factually what 'disunioned' the church. We are too far away now from origins for over sensitivity.." 192 pages. Wesley, John, 1703-1791. Baker, Frank, editor.
The Works of John Wesley. Volume 25. Letters I, 1721-1739. Edited by Frank Baker.

Publisher: Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1980. The Oxford Edition of the Works Volume 25.
763 p.; 22 cm. "This edition of the works of John Wesley reflects the quickened interest in the heritage of Christian thought that has characterized both ecumenical churchmanship and dominant theological perspectives during the last half-century. A fully critical presentation of Wesley's writings had long been a desideratum in order to furnish documentary sources illustrating his contribution to both catholic and evangelical Christianity." "Although many of the letters of John Wesley are of value as literature, especially as crisp statements of his views or desires..., their major importance is as a revelation of him as a man, and of the people and events of his day, especially those linked with the Methodist movement. They furnish us, in fact, with a portrait through seventy years both more revealing in detail and fuller in coverage than any other source."
