Condition: Fair-/None Signed letter by the author laid in, dated March 14, 1949, and sent from England to the U.S., (postmarked envelope included), describing his broken leg, his first son's 'missing' the war by a month, his younger son's aspirations in writing, the relationship between the two and, interestingly, his writer's block at the time. Green cloth boards, gilt title block on spine, light edgewear. Newspaper photograph Una Brosamond Ristow-Capper on their honeymoon pasted on to ffep, which stained pastedown opposite. Front hinge cracked, otherwise good condition. Spine leans a little. 8vo. BOOK INFO: In four parts, Mabel, Nona, Effie, and Mabel-Effie-Nona, the twists and turns of love and friendships in a 1939 small English town during the war. In many ways ahead of its time—dealing with an unhappy marriage, eventual divorce, and an unwed mother who commits suicide—according to the New York Times, If Winter Comes was the best-selling book in the U.S. for all of 1922. The book was made in to a movie in 1927, directed by Victor Saville and starring Walter Pidgeon and Deborah Kerr, with Angela Lansbury as Mabel, now a Turner Classic Movie. Language: English.
