Morse, Samuel Finley Breese, 1791-1872
Foreign Conspiracy Against The Liberties Of The United States...
Publisher: New York: Van Nostrand & Dwight... 1836. 191 p.; 16 cm. American Imprints 39059. Title continues: The Numbers Under the Signature of Brutus, originally published in the New York Observer. Revised and Corrected, With Notes, By The Author... Fourth Edition. The inventor of the telegraph went through an anti-Catholic, native-American period. He had returned from art study in Rome in 1832 with a strong aversion to Catholicism and in 1835 ran for mayor of New York City on the Native-American ticket. Ironically, it was during this same period that the idea for the telegraph developed. The inspiration for his invention had come on shipboard in 1832 and he devised his first apparatus in 1835-36. Morse argues that the Catholic Church, in conspiracy with governments such as Austria, intended to reduce the United States to theological servitude. NUC 396: 374-- MH, PU, NN. Copy in publisher's cloth with printed paper spine label; bookplate & owner name; excellent condition. Stock#NS0050.
