Hahn, Jacob H.
Jessie June Carter, Eight Songs, December 26, 1892 : 8 Songs by J. H. Hahn
 Picture
Publisher: Jacob H. Hahn; Detroit: 1892.
Poor with no dust jacket First Edition Hardcover 42 pages; 4to (12") 31 cm; Dark red full leather, marbled endpapers, blindstamped title 'Songs' on front. An amazing collection of original handwritten music. This is not a scribbled manuscript but perfectly neat musical notation, with lyrics, and with ornate decorative fonts for titles, all done by hand in pen and ink. There are 8 lovely art songs here, with tunes, lyrics, and full piano, in a large hand, on large sturdy pages. (Image shows title page) ; Jacob H. Hahn (1847-1902) was the founder and director of the Detroit Conservatory of Music circa 1880, and founded the Music Teachers National Association in 1885. We assume these songs were written in honor of, or to be sung by, Jessie June Carter, whose husband was famous businessman Murray W. Sales, president of Sales & Broad of Detroit. ; Songs and their poets are: 1) Couldst look as dear, by Thomas Moore. 2) Love thee, dearest. 3) Break, break, by Alfred Lord Tennyson. 4) Love me, if I live, by Barry Cornwall, aka Bryan Waller Procter. 5) Fountain of Good. 6) Be strong, by Adelaide Procter. 7) Jesus, thy blood and righteousness, by Zinzendorf. 8) The violet, by Bayard Taylor. ; We have graded this item Poor, the main defect being that nearly half of the backstrip (spine) is missing, and the exterior is quite worn and chipped. Two pages have minor pencil marks apparently correcting errors in the music. This music was most definitely used at least once, long ago, as there are a few light smudges to the lower corners, as one would expect. Otherwise interior is clean. Binding is tight, all pages attached and quite readable. Rare and possibly unique. Sold as is.
