Historical Excerpts of Pennsylvania Granges: 125th Anniversary Edition
 Picture
Publisher: Pennsylvania State Grange, 1998 Harrisburg, PA.
Book. Book condition: Very Good to Near Fine. Trade paperback 4to - over 9 - 12" tall "These historical excerpts of the Pennsylvania State Grange, the Pomona Granges and the Subordinate Granges were developed especially for Grangers who are interested in the outstanding impact that the Grange has had on people, communities, and our state and nation. Pennsylvania State Grange has always been regarded as one of the premiere service organizations in our Commonwealth; it has earned this status due to the colossal efforts of thousands of Grangers who devote countless hours of time and energy doing good service for their local communities through Pomona and Subordinate Granges. For 125 years, Pennsylvania Grangers have been preserving the traditions that have made Pennsylvania a great state. Some of those valued traditions include individual growth, good citizenship, strong families, community development, and a quality of life that is appropriate for a mature society. From its founding on September 18, 1873, in Reading, Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Grangers have been working to improve our lives through Grange programming. Clearly, Grangers have made a difference helping to make our homes and communities a better place to live. As you read this history of the work of Grangers throughout our Commonwealth, you will realize the special richness that the Grange has provided for our local communities. During the past 125 years, many social, economic, and political forces have challenged Grangers. These forces included demographic shifts, urbanization, lifestyle changes, global communications, high technology, and contemporary culture dynamics. The grange has provided the forum to address these forces and to chart positive change.." xvii + 274 pages. Book is in VERY GOOD condition. Paper wrappers.

Weeks, Joseph D.
History of the Knights of Pythias, with an Account of the Life and Times of Damon and Pythias
 Picture
Publisher: Jos. D. Weeks and Company, 1872 Pittsburgh, PA.
Book. Book condition: Fair. No Jacket. Hardcover 12mo - over 6 - 7" tall "It has not been our aim in this little volume simply to repeat the story of the friendship of Damon and Pythias. Had it been, much time and labor might have been spared by telling it. But we have endeavored to show what it was that led them, even in the face of death, to be true to each other. This we believe to have been the teachings of the Pythagorean Society. In carrying out our purpose, we have not only given an account of the life of Pythagoras, and of the constitution of his society, but of the three other great Secret Societies of antiquity, the Eleusinian, the Isianic, and the Cabirian, which had such influence upon Pythagoras and his society. The rapid spread of our Order, and the constant inquiries concerning its history and principles, demand that every true Knight be ready, for the honor of our institution, to explain the latter and tell the former. To aid in this duty, and at the same time to make the hidden meanings of our beautiful Ritual plain, has been our object. How far we have succeeded, we leave to the judgment of every intelligent Knight. Our thanks are due to those brethren who have so kindly furnished us accounts of the rise of the Order in the States.
