Bannerman, Helen
The Story of Little Black Sambo
 Picture
Publisher: Charles E. Graham & Co., Newark, NJ, and New York.
Hardcover. Condition: Fair/None Red cloth backstrip is rubbed at spine ends; Full-color pictorial, paper-covered boards are edgeworn. Corners rounded off and bare. Pictorial back cover is rubbed. Full-color pictorial pastedown with red border/background. Owner's name in crayon on FFEP. Gift inscription penned inside an illustration for that purpose opposite title page. One page has a pencil drawing of a child figure, another pair of pages has pencil scribbles. Light fingerprint smudges/toning in margins. BOOK INFO: Six full-color plates. Illustrated throughout in B&W. First published in Oct. 1899, the book is now cherished for its controversial history. The Sambo character is a South Indian boy who meets some tigers. The term 'sambo' had come to be considered a racial slur for a black person. A cursory read reveals nothing inherently racist about the story, which is, in fact, adorable, but the original character illustrations were reminiscent of 'darky iconography.' (These may well be those original illustrations.). Language: English. Pages: 27
