Braver, Adam
Mr. Lincoln's Wars: A Novel in Thirteen Stories
 Picture
Publisher: Perennial, New York, New York, U.S.A., 2004.
As New with no dust jacket. Soft Cover. ISBN: 0060081198 Publisher's glossy wraps. Small 8vo. 308, (1) pp. This is a new, unopened, unmarked copy in perfect, pristine condition. AS NEW. In this highly ambitious collection, Adam Braver explores Abraham Lincoln's inner life and personal turmoils - while also reflecting on the indelible impact Lincoln had on the nation during the last year of his presidency. Braver brings the president to life, not just as the strong and resilient leader of history books but also as a grief-stricken father, heartbroken over the loss of his young son. Across a rich canvas of truth and imagination, "Mr. Lincoln's Wars" reveals a president within the White House walls. We see Lincoln as he explores the meaning of loss through a chance encounter with the father of a slain soldier. And a good-hearted young Union soldier is quickly turned into a killer in the name of President Lincoln. Finally, there is the assassination and the autopsy, as seen through the eyes of John Wilkes Booth, Mary Lincoln, the assistant surgeon general, and one of Lincoln's closest friends. Brilliant in its depiction of the country during the waning days of the war, this book is an insightful and moving exploration of the myth of celebrity and the passions it arouses. More than anything, "Mr. Lincoln's Wars" introduces a talented new writer whose storytelling ability knows no bounds. Trade Paperback. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall

Cather, Willa (Sibert), 1876-1947.
Sapphira and the Slave Girl.

Publisher: Knopf, NY, 1940.
viii, 295 p.; 19.5 cm. "The chief theme of the novel is the subtle persecution of a beautiful mulatto girl by her jealous mistress. ...strong feelings and bitter wrongs are hidden under the warm atmosphere of good manners and domestic comfort. The period is 1856, just before the outbreak of the Civil War. The setting is the beautiful Virginia countryside, and the narrative is peopled with unusual characters: the mountain people, grim, disapproving ‘Republicans', and Sapphira's African slaves... attractive to the writer as individuals, and... presented by a sympathetic artist who is neither reformer nor sentimentalist." Hanna, James Milton
A Man Called Shiloh
 Picture
Publisher: Cherokee Books, 2001 Little Creek, DE.
ISBN: 0964045877 Book. Book condition: Near Fine. Trade paperback Signed by Author(s) 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall SIGNED by author on title page! "The War Between the States had a catastrophic effect on America, especially the South. A way of life, a culture, and an entire society changed. There was a mass movement of the population west to start a new life...This was the climate of social unrest that Dan Thompson returned to after his release from the prisoner of war camp. Yes, Dan Thompson was a real person. He fought and was wounded in the battle of Shiloh. He is the basis for the character in this book. Dan Thompson alias Dan Shiloh is depicted as a person who is cool under fire and during emergencies. The War Between The States produced many outstanding lawmen as well as outlaws such as the likes of Jesse and Frank James..Dan is credited with having killed several men. This is realistic for a lawman in the West immediately after the Civil War. One Texas Ranger who died in the early nineteen fifties had killed over 55 men in performing his duty. He was assigned duty along the border in Southwest Texas..I have tried to characterize Dan Shiloh as a compassionate person regardless of being forced into killing several men. He doesn't attempt to build a reputation as a gun fighter. Because of the caliber of person he is, events beyond his control occur that result in situations that are settled by the use of guns. Many early western characters weren't gentlemen in any way. When they decided to kill someone it was often achieved from ambush. Few had the nerve to face down another man and risk being killed. The Civil War battles, cities and locations in this book are real. I have attempted to depict these places as they were in those days." 228 pages. James M. Hanna was a teacher in Delaware for fifteen years and retired in Delaware afterwards. Book is in NEAR FINE condition. Paper wrappers.

Mallon, Thomas, 1951-
Henry and Clara/ Thomas Mallon.

Publisher: New York, Ticknor & Fields, 1994.
[viii], 358 p. ; 22 cm. Novel about Henry Rathbone and Clara Harris, the engaged couple who were Abraham Lincoln's guests at Ford's Theater the night that he was shot. "But Lincoln's assassination is only one part of this novel--for in researching the lives of Henry and Clara Rathbone, Mallon uncovered an even more dramatic story of passion, scandal, heroism, murder, and madness. Imaginatively re-creating their lives, he tells the larger story of nineteenth-century Victorian America: a society structured above suppressed impulses and undercurrents that grew stronger as the century progressed." Publisher: J. B. Lippincott Company, 1942 Philadelphia, PA.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall This is a novel based on Shelby's Mexican Expedition of 1865. "There is no manner of doubt that the Mexican Expedition of the 'No Surrender' Confederates, under General Joseph Orville Shelby of Missouri, was one of the most outré of the episodes of the War Between the States. It is true that it was little known at the time and is now almost forgotten. The nation, both North and South, was too engrossed in the vast drama of the breaking up of the Confederate armies in the East, the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, and the other events in the nearer theater of conflict, to pay much attention to what was going on beyond the Mississippi. Yet Shelby's Mexican Expedition deserves remembrance. It represented the last effort of a cohesive segment of the Confederacy to save something from the wreckage. Although only about a thousand men crossed the Rio Grande with Shelby and marched toward Mexico City, the movement had in it the seeds of a mighty change in history. But for adventitious circumstance, it might have succeeded..This book does not seek to offer a factual, day-by-day account of the expedition. It would be impossible in a novel.." 508 pages. Book is in GOOD condition; expected wear but no major flaws. No dust jacket.
