Fully illustrated, its subject matter is based on latest modern scientific research and practical experiments; and its writer has been a well-known authority in the poultry field for over forty years. In recent years the turkey business has shown a remarkable expansion and an extremely profitable one. Rice, Elmer C., Illustrated by: B&W Illustrations
How: The Book with Two Title Pages (How to Get the Most Fun and Money Out of pigeons) or (Fun and Money in Pigeons)
 Picture
Publisher: Howard Street House Melrose Massachusettes 1943.
Red cloth hardcover in green and yellow dust jacket with squabs in nesting bowl. 512 pages, illustrated in black and white with photos, artwork, etc. One of the most confusing books ever published outside of Ulysses but certainly more entertaining. It's a combination of advertising methods and sales techniques, plus pigeon breeding, plus autobiography, plus self-help, politics, plus wry humor, plus, um, recipes - all kind of mixed together. Rice did write some of the standard books on pigeon rearing including the National Standard Squab Book, but he apparently was trying to appeal to a very broad market here. This volume includes pages on which to finish the title 'How' and submit the suggestions. Oh well - there is hardly any way to describe this thing: you'd have to read it to believe it. There actually is quite a bit on pigeon-rearing (and advertising and marketing) but it's not a beginner how-to on the subject. The book is in near fine condition, with a little rubbing to spine ends. The jacket has suffered the consdequences of time, with a large chip running almost the length of the fore edge, but affecting only part of the 'y' in 'money' in the cover title. Several smaller chips along the top edge. It's pretty rough, but hanging in there - and significant in that the book itself does not bear the full title (just 'How"). Egad. Wene Chick Farms
Wene Extra-Profit Chicks
 Picture
Publisher: Wene Chick Farms, 1936 Vineland, NJ.
Book. Book condition: Very Good. Soft cover 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall "This book tells the story onj the greatest baby chick breeding values we have ever produced. Because so many poultry keepers do not find it convenient to come to Vineland and visit us, we come to your home with the catalog and bring you the true facts on the breeding and handling of our chicks, by word and picture. For the past 17 years we have by careful selection and breeding development, perfected strains that have proven their ability to return more profit to growers in eggs and meat production. Today, after these many years of selective breeding, we have attained the highest breeding standards..the greatest breeding values in our experience. While superintendent of the nationally famous Vineland Egg-Laying Contest I became convinced that the White Leghorn was one of our greatest egg-producing machines - and determined to further develop and improve the breed in profit-making qualities. Today, Wene White Leghorns make up many of the most profitable flocks in the east - more profitable because of the large body size.. their vigor and hardiness.. their longevity and sustained heavy production of large, chalk white eggs that bring premium, top quality prices on the best markets. You will also be interested in the Cross-Breeds which we have perfected. As one of the pioneers int he production of hybrids, we have likewise developed our now famous Wyan-Rocks, Bram-Rocks and Red-Rocks to a high standard. Each has been developed for a special purpose - for high egg production - for choice broilers, medium roasters and heavy roasters.." Fully illustrated. 32 pages. Book is in VERY GOOD condition.
