Original newspaper ad from the Salem Gazette (Mass.), Jan 27, 1871 for Dr.Walker's California Vinegar Bitters. The ad measures 10 x 2.5 inches and lists a great many ailments which the product claims to be beneficial in treating, from rheumatism and gout to skin diseases and tape worms. Very Good+ Softcover 12mo (7.5") 19 cm; This is a lot of 3 books on hypnotism published in Detroit Michigan, Windsor Ontario and Racine Wisconsin by Johnson Smith & Company, 1914-1940. All are identical size, use the same b/w line illustrations and have no author listed. ; Books are: 1) Mesmerism, Mind Reading, Hypnotism and Spiritualism: How to Hypnotize, orange covers, 64 pages of text + 64 pages of ads for novelty products. 2) Book on Practical Hypnotism: A Complete Treatise on Hypnotism, tan covers, 31p text + 34p ads. 3) 25 Lessons in Hypnotism: Magnetic Healing and Personal Magnetism, gray covers, 32p text + 32p ads. ; All books show light sunning to covers, pages tanned from age, but almost no wear. No marks. All bindings tight. Books like these were not made to last and usually fall apart on their own but these specimens are in remarkably good condition. Quite scarce.

Good Softcover 103 pages; 12mo (7.75") 20 cm; Softcover with stiff green covers, black cloth over spine, 2 b/w portrait photos, index. ; Explains 'biodynamics' (also known as animal magnetism, electro-biology, hypnotism), gives brief history of its greatest exemplars (starting with Frederick Anton Mesmer), instructions on how to perform 'operations' or 'experiments' on willing subjects, how to cure individuals of numerous ailments, etc. ; Heavily edgeworn. Covers have many chips and small edge tears. Everything present and readable. Ends of spine frayed. Pages a bit yellowed from age. No marks. Binding tight and square. Quite scarce.

The most interesting part is all the ads for bizarre patent medicines, including Dr. Davis Anti-Headache, Davis Worm Wafers, Davis Kid-Ne-Tabs, Mrs. Logan's Rocky Mountain Tea, Perry Davis Pain Killer, Allen's Lung Balsam, Dr. Wilhoft Ague Tonic, and more. 3 small b/w illustrations on rear cover of Davis products. ; Name stamped on rear (J. W. Pfeil, presumably a local druggist) in blank area in faded ink. ; Top edge shows dampstains, which are visible throughout, but not too dark, except on rear page. Small closed tear to crown, otherwise only light edgewear. Binding intact. Scarce in any condition.

This appears to be a later printing, no date. ; Wow, what a hoot. The author, who apparently invented his own after-name abbreviation (F. A. I. P. ) explains how to perform hypnosis, how to magnetize and de-magnetize the subject, how to place the subject in a trance that will last for one week, how to cure epilepsy and cancer, much more. ; Bookstore name stamped on title page in small lettering in faded ink. Two leaves have tiny holes, not affecting any text or ilustrations. Small crease to front cover lower tip. No other defects. Quite scarce in any condition.
