Stevenson, Robert Louis
David Balfour Being the Memoirs of His Adventures At Home and Abroad
 Picture
Publisher: Charles Scribner's Sons NY 1905.
Good+ with no dust jacket Hardcover Continued from the title: The second part: In which are set forth his misfortunes anent [regarding] the Appin murder; his troubles with Lord Advocate Grant; captivity on the Bass Rock; Journey into Holland and France; and singular relations with James More Drummond or MacGregor, a son of the notorious Rob Roy, and his daughter Catriona. David Balfour is the main character in a few of Stevenson's books written in first person. Therefore he is often mistakenly thought to be the author. Scott, Bart, Sir Walter
Heart Of Mid-lothian, II
 Picture
Publisher: Archibald Constable and Company Westminster 1896.
Very Good Hardcover The seventh of Sir Walter Scott’s Waverley Novels. It was originally published in four volumes on 25 July 1818, under the title of Tales of My Landlord, 2nd series, and the author was given as "Jedediah Cleishbotham, Schoolmaster and Parish-clerk of Gandercleugh". Although the identity of the author of the Waverley Novels was well-known by this time, Scott still chose to write under a pseudonym. The book was released only seven months after the highly successful Rob Roy. Scott was at the time recovering from illness, and wrote at an even more furious pace than usual. When the book was released, it more than matched the popularity of his last novel. Extremities rubbed. Brown leather backstrips with raised bands, gilt decorations, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt; ribbon markers. Peveril Of The Peak, Volume III
 Picture
Publisher: Archibald Constable and Company Westminster 1896.
Very Good Hardcover Julian Peveril, a Cavalier, is in love with Alice Bridgenorth, a Roundhead's daughter, but both he and his father are accused of involvement with the "Popish Plot" of 1678. Sir Geoffrey Peveril and Major Bridgenorth had been boys together; and although they adopted different views in religion and politics, the major's influence had saved the Royalist's life after the battle of Bolton-le-Moor, and Lady Peveril had brought up his motherless girl, Alice, with her own son. The Black Dwarf
 Picture
Publisher: Archibald Constable and Company Westminster 1896.
Very Good Hardcover As Hobbie Elliot was returning over a wild moor from a day's sport, thinking of the legends he had heard of its supernatural occupants after nightfall, he was overtaken by Patrick Earnscliff, whose father had been killed in a quarrel with the laird of Ellislaw, Richard Vere. The moon suddenly revealed the figure of a human dwarf, who, on being spoken to, refused their offers of assistance, and bid them begone. Having invited Earnscliff to sup with his womenfolks, and pass the night at his farm, Hobbie accompanied him next morning to confront the strange being by daylight; and having assisted him in collecting stones for constructing a hut, they supplied him with food and other necessaries. In a short time he had completed his dwelling, and became known to the neighbours, for whose ailments he prescribed, as Elshender the Recluse. Extremities rubbed. THE COLOUR OF LIFE

Publisher: London: John Lane [Bodley Head] Chicago: Way and Williams Chicago Illinois, USA 1896.
Coarse-textured light brown cloth hardcover with gilt stamped spine titles, deckled edges. 101 pages plus colophon, plus 2+2 [reviews of previous books by the author] plus 16 [full page illustration of John Lane's Bodley Head shop, plus book ads]. A collection of essays on nature, art, and the status of women. This is a handsome and interesting volume, with both the English and American publishers indicated on the title page. In addition, the colophon indicates printing by W.H. White and Co., Ltd, Edinburgh Riverside Press. Affixed (upside down) to the rear paste-down is a label for the Revere Memorial Library, Isle Au Haut, Maine - apparently a free lending library with hours on Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons. (There are no library stamps, checkout slips, or anything else by way of library marks.) Overall the book is remarkably clean, gilt bright and cover clean and unstained except for a couple of subtle marks on rear cover. Lower corners rubbed, very light rubbing on spine edges and ends. The endpaper pastedowns are speckled from glue tranfer, which has offset to the free endpapers, and the internal paper has toned around the edges in a mellow manner. All in all a pleasing little book in the hand, and the prose ain't bad either.
